$250,000 Dog Insurance Policy Not Always Sufficient

Witchita, KS - Some cities enact laws that require pit bull owners to carry a $250,000 liability policy. While $250,000 is better than $100,000 (a former standard), it hardly covers severe dog bite trauma from the breed. DogsBite.org mentioned in a recent post that Alan Hill's medical costs topped 1 million dollars. Alan was attacked and nearly killed by three pit bulls in May of 2006.

This past Thanksgiving, toddler Jaydin Embry, was mauled by a pit bull and left with severe injury to his scalp. His mother was also injured trying to pull the dog from him. While Jaydin's recovery is making progress, he needs to undergo a skin graft procedure in January. After this surgery, the family estimates the total cost for his medical care will reach $750,000 to $1 million dollars.

While dangerous breeds may or may not bite more than other breeds, when they do bite, the results are often devastating. Furthermore, if the dog owner only has $250,000 in dog bite coverage, who pays the additional $750,000?
