2008 Fatality: Brooklyn Infant Killed by Family Dog

Brooklyn Infant, Andrew Stein, Killed by Family’s Dog
In the first fatality of 2008, an 8-month old boy was mauled to death by his family's Doberman pinscher while playing on the floor. It is unclear what might have provoked the dog, a 7-year old, neutered male named Macabee.

Toddler Andrew Stein was fatally bitten on the head and left with a crushed skull. The grandmother, who had been babysitting him, was in the kitchen at the time. She heard the child scream and ran to see what happened. Unable to pull the dog away from the boy, she cried out in desperation. The building superintendent comment:

The grandmother “told me she was screaming for help because the dog had the baby on the floor, but she couldn’t get him away,” he said. “She said the dog was chewing on his head.”

Emergency responders arrived at the scene and shot the dog with a tranquilizer. The city's health department said the dog and the circumstances remain under investigation. Under city rules, the owner of a dangerous dog must agree to have it euthanized, or a hearing must be held to determine whether the city can order such action.

What a terrible tragedy. As the father of a 7 month old girl this is chilling. I will never trust any dog around my baby. A seemingly sound dobie is a great example of the unpredictability of dogs.

I read once about a pomeranian that attacked and killed a tiny toddler. Dogs and tiny people together can be soooooooo dangerous.

Exactly JR - any dog can be deadly when left alone with a small child by a neglectful parent.
