Pit bull mauls 5-year old returning from school
Pit Bull Mauls 5-Year Old Returning From SchoolMemphis, TN - A five year-old boy walking home from school was mauled by a large pit bull Thursday afternoon. The child is now is stable condition.
"I heard the screaming and I knew it was the dog... Biting him and pulling him and tossing him... It was shocking, terrifying, very frightening," says Linda Wicks. "I just came out and when I saw what was going on, I grabbed my broom and just ran out and just went to beating the dog."
Police credit Ms. Wicks for saving the boy's life, calling her a hero. The dog's caretakers are very sorry a child was injured. They say "Beast" was playful, good around people -- timid even. They say the dog was never a problem before and they think the dog was provoked, then set free.
"The kids come in here and mess with him," says Tempestt Bolin, "They throw balls and stuff at him. My mom had to run the kids off last Saturday morning on both sides of the house messing with the dogs."
But neighbors say the dog had been roaming the street all day, lunging at the mailman and neighbors. Police shot and killed the dog on scene. Animal Services are testing the dog for disease. Police are still investigating how the dog got loose. Two other dogs at the home were found secured behind the gate.
