Council OK's dog ordinance with more bite
Council OK's Dog Ordinance with More BiteCottage Grove MN - City Council members approved changes to the city’s dangerous dog ordinance, placing more responsibility on the owners of aggressive dogs and authorizing authorities to impound and or destroy dogs of violators. The updated ordinance allows the city to cite the pet’s owner/caretaker and establishes liability for related costs.
Mark Craig, the father of a young girl who was attacked by a pit bull while standing in her own yard last August was left to try and recoup damages incurred from the mauling on his own. The owner of the dangerous dog received only a small fine.
“I’d like to see them (banned),” Craig said after Wednesday night’s meeting, “but this is the best they can do. Cottage Grove stepped up.”
The amended law also authorizes the city to compile a list of dogs deemed dangerous or potentially dangerous to be made available to the public. There are currently 1 dangerous and 15 potentially dangerous dogs in Cottage Grove.
