Boy Has Ear ReattachedUPDATE: 2/8/08 A spokeswoman said the boy was recovering after the surgery in Christchurch Hospital. It would not be known for a few days whether the operation was a success. The toddler was attacked by the dog on Wednesday. The boy's ear was ripped off in the attack.
Constable Rob Stuart said the dog, a one-year-old pure-bred Staffordshire bull terrier, was owned by family friends with whom the Australian tourists were staying on their visit to Mid-Canterbury. An animal control spokeswoman said the dog was registered and they were not aware of previous problems with the animal.
2/6/08: Pit Bull Type Dog Rips Off Ear of 2-Year oldNew Zealand - The attack happened yesterday afternoon at Lake Crichton, near Dunsandel, and is believed to have involved a bull mastiff or pitbull-type dog. Senior Constable Rod Stuart reports that the boy was playing with the dog on some grass when he was attacked.
"The dog has attacked and taken the child's ear off," Stuart said. "The dog has been pounded by dog control."
The boy was taken to a nearby hospital with "severe injuries" to the head area. Stuart said an investigation would be carried out once he was able to speak to the family.
