Springfield: police beat officer shoots pit bull
Police Beat Officer Shoots Pit BullSpringfield IL - An off-duty police officer shot and killed a pit bull late Thursday after the dog charged at him in an aggressive manner. The officer lives in the area and reported that the two pit bulls in the neighborhood had been aggressive in the past.
At about 11 p.m., he saw one of the dogs running loose with what appeared to be a raccoon or cat in its mouth. The dog ran near a residence, and the officer went outside to get the address so he could notify Animal Control. When he approached the house, the dog came at him, and the officer fired one round from his police-issue sidearm.
No owner for the dog was listed.
Tension regarding pit bulls has likely risen due to the
tragedy of Amber Strode, who was recently found mauled in the same area by two pit bulls after a drug overdose. At this stage, animal behaviorists and animal control officers still can't explain the behavior of the dogs. The investigation is ongoing.
