Calgary Woman Loses Finger and Dog in Pit Bull Attack

known finger loses in one week due to pit bull attacks. Sheryle Elsasser, a 38-year-old mother of two, was walking her Shih Tzu-Bichon when two dogs approached "out of nowhere." She kicked a brown pit bull away, but a black pit bull started attacking her and her dog. Two drivers stopped and witnesses began hitting the dog with snow shovels and hockey sticks to end the assault.
She said, "I was just hitting it and doing everything I could. I was screaming as loud as I could and hoping someone would hear me." Elsasser was taken to the hospital by ambulance with bites to both hands. The top of her middle finger on her right hand was bitten off in the attack. Elasser is now maimed and handicapped for the rest of her life. Her dog Gizmo underwent surgery for its injuries but died Sunday.
"Animal-aggression," in pit bulls consistently injures people and kills pets. The behavior is unacceptable.
Fred Crittenden, supervisor of bylaw enforcement for Medicine Hat, said the dog is known to officers and the dog's owner has been previously charged. On Jan. 10 -- just two months ago -- Wendy Wolcoski was walking her dog on the same walking path as Elsasser. Wolcoski said a black pit bull ran over, latched on to her dog and wouldn't let go. A woman driving by stopped to help, and together they were able to get the dog free.
Elsasser was outraged to hear the pit bull may have been involved in an earlier attack, especially considering two nearby schools. Crittenden said charges have been laid against the owner of the dog, and the dog has been seized. But will the dog be seized only to be returned to its owner again? Authorities returned the dog once and the animal quickly created two new victims. How many more victims need there be?
