DogsBite logo   Over 150 dog breeds populate the US. Studies show that two breeds account for nearly 70% of bites that end in death and serious injury. We must regulate these breeds or risk the safety of our families and pets.

Pit Bulls that Attack Macon Animal Control Officer Euthanized

Three Pit Bulls Don't Get Returned to Owner
Macon County, GA - Three pit bulls that attacked a Macon animal control officer this month were euthanized Monday morning. The officer, Edward Van de Walker, received bites to his leg, shoulder, hip and arms on April 8th when three pit bulldogs attacked him while he was making a service call. Walker was out of work for about a week.

On April 8th, a Buena Vista Drive resident called to say his dog had tried to bite him, and he wanted the animal picked up, said Jim Johnson, director of animal control. When the officer arrived, the owner said he wanted the animal quarantined for 10 days, but wanted to get the dog back afterward. Animal control policy does not allow this.

Johnson said the officer was taking (the dog) back to its pen in the backyard when the other two dogs came out from nowhere. "He never saw them." They came out and knocked him down, and the attack was on, said Johnson. Walker managed to get away from the dogs and call Johnson to come to the scene. "When I got there, he had all three dogs on the truck," Johnson said.

The dogs were quarantined for 10 days. Van de Walker has been on light duty since he returned to work. No police report was written, which is normal in this kind of situation, according to Johnson. Also, no charges have been made against the dogs' owner. Both Johnson and Walker are glad the dogs "are not going to hurt anybody else."
