DogsBite logo   Over 150 dog breeds populate the US. Studies show that two breeds account for nearly 70% of bites that end in death and serious injury. We must regulate these breeds or risk the safety of our families and pets.

Surgery Helps 6-Year Old Recover from Rottweiler Attack

Midland Boy is Back in School After Rottweiler Attack
Midland, NC - In January, Kaleb Setzer, 6, was attacked by a neighbor’s dog at his house in Midland. The rottweiler, who was being watched by a neighbor for a friend, was later shot. The mauling left Kaleb with serious injuries to his face and neck. He remained in critical condition at CMC-NorthEast for nine days.

When paramedics brought Kaleb to the emergency room, his right ear was hanging from his neck. Physicians called in Dr. Daniel Saad, a pediatric surgeon, to operate on Kaleb. The doctor said, "One eye was closed, but he was awake and able to tell me his name." With the help of a pediatric plastic eye surgeon, Saad went to work repairing Kaleb’s face.

Right now, direct sunlight is Kaleb's worst enemy, says Saad. Sunlight can damage the pink scar tissue and the scars will darken, causing them to be seen throughout his life. If Kaleb takes care, the scars will look like small white lines as he ages. Saad reports that Kaleb looks better each time he sees him and that site is returning to his left eye.

When Kaleb first returned to school, his classmates were shocked. His mother Melody said his classmates thought his appearance was “unbelievable." She also said that the kids "got used to it and moved on." For the most part, Kaleb is back to normal when it comes to being a six-year-old boy. He said he likes P.E. class and hates that he missed this year’s T-ball season.

Do not let a friend or relative dump a rottweiler or pit bull on you to "watch" while the owner is away. Do not under any circumstances.

Many parents of child victims do not release the child's name to the press (as a privacy matter). But these parents did, and they offered a photo as well. I am sure it is to help prevent similar tragedies in the future.

Everyone at DogsBite.org is rooting for Kaleb's recovery. We honor his parents for sharing his story as well...

Looks like the little guy is recovering nicely...No mention in the article about how the Rott owners are living up to their financial responsibilities.

The family has held fundraisers in the past. warning: GRAPHIC
