DogsBite logo   Over 150 dog breeds populate the US. Studies show that two breeds account for nearly 70% of bites that end in death and serious injury. We must regulate these breeds or risk the safety of our families and pets.

Toledo to Add Mandatory Sterilization to Pit Bull "Vicious" Ordinance

Toledo Takes Another Step Toward Mandatory Pit Bull Sterilization
Toledo, OH - In a state dubbed the "battleground" for breed-specific legislation, and a city that has tried to accommodate pit bull owners, -- by passing a vicious ordinance instead of a ban -- the pit bull situation in Toledo, Ohio is still a mess. This is in large part due to the attraction criminals have to pit bulls and the popularity of dogfighting in the city.

Lucas County Dog Warden, Tom Skeldon is now recommending mandatory sterilization of pit bulls in addition to the "vicious" ordinance. Sterilization would have been added to Toledo's pit bull policy years ago, had their "vicious" ordinance not been tied up in courts. After years of litigation, the ordinance was reactivated (see United States Supreme Court ruling) in 2007.

City Councilwoman Wilma Brown agrees with Skeldon. She wants to at least make it legal to sterilize all pit bulls the warden picks up in Toledo. Such a measure is a massive tool toward combating dogfighting. Fighting dog owners like to keep their dogs fertile. Skeldon adds that fighting dog owners also like to breed their dogs; offspring can sell for several hundred dollars (and a lot more).
DogsBite.org emphasizes the need for all larger cities to require mandatory sterilization of pit bulls. Doing so will reduce pit bull bites, dogfighting and high occupancy levels in city shelters.
