05/15-18/08 Pit Bulls Shot by Police
Pit Bull Owner Busted for Domestic Abuse (05/15/08): New Hanover, NC - Last week John Williams and his wife were in dog court. Their pit bull "Joe" was in trouble for biting a deputy who lived nearby. The dog court ruled that Williams had to restrain and muzzle the dog. Williams was not happy by the ruling.
Coincidentally, the following night, New Hanover County deputies were called to the Williams home on a domestic dispute. During an arrest attempt, the pit bull appeared and viciously attacked the sheriff's deputy who was taken to the hospital. A second deputy shot and killed the dog, a dog Williams told reporters he was very fond of after the dog court hearing."I've had him for eight years. I've trained him every day of my life, and they're in there acting as if they can gang up on you, you know, just because he bit a sheriff." Animal control removed the pit bull's body from the house (pictured). Deputies took John Williams away, under arrest, and charged him with one count of domestic assault on a female, one count of pointing a gun and two counts of resisting a public officer. He's being held without bond at the New Hanover County Jail.
Arrested for Shooting a Growling Pit Bull (05/12/08): Nashville, TN - A man was arrested in south Nashville after police said he intentionally shot his dog. According to Animal Control, Maurico Rios shot his female pit bull at his home. Police said he told them that the dog growled at him, prompting Rios to shoot her. Animal Control took three dogs that were on Rios' property, including two pit bull puppies. Officials said Biggs will be charged with animal cruelty.
Gastonia Police Shoot Pit Bull (05/14/08): Gastonia, NC - Two police officers tracking an accused strong-arm robbery suspect fired their guns at a pit bull, striking it at least once. While tracking the suspect, police encountered an English bulldog and a pit bull. The pit bull ended up fighting with the K-9 handler. The officer pushed the dog away, but the pit bull charged again. The handler and other officer both shot -- one bullet caught the pit bull's hind leg.
Ocean Pines Cop Shoots Pit Bull After Attack on Woman (05/14/08): Ocean Pines, MD - A state police trooper shot a pit bull terrier who charged at the officer as he was investigating complaints that the dog had attacked a Pines woman. Police said the trooper who responded to the area of 59 Falconbridge Road was told that the dog was loose and had also tried to attack children and other animals.
As the officer attempted to contact the dog’s owner, who was not at home, police said the pit bull charged the trooper who fired several rounds, hitting the dog. Police said the injured dog fled and was later found in a neighbor’s yard. The pit bull was put down (because the first few bullets didn't kill it) and taken away by Worcester County Animal Control officers.
Pit Bull Shot in Head by Reno Police Officer (05/15/08): Reno, NV - A pit bull was shot in the head by a Reno police officer in Stead. Officers responded to a call of a fight in the Sky Vista and Black Bear Drive area. While on the scene, a pit bull dog aggressively attacked one officer. The report said, "The officer attempted to intimidate the dog by yelling at the dog but it only made the dog more aggressive."Yelling, shrieks and clapping can send a pit bull into blitz mode! The officer then pepper sprayed the dog with little effect. He used up his entire can of pepper spray trying to keep the dog away from him. When the officer was out of pepper spray, the dog aggressively attacked the officer again, and the officer drew his sidearm and shot the dog once in the head. But the dog still did not die. The dog fled the area and was later found by animal control officers.
Pasadena Officer Shoots Pit Bull (05/18/08): Pasadena, TX - Officer Vance Mitchell said officers were dispatched to a home with an open door. The arriving officer could see into the home that appeared to be vacant. As he approached the front door to inspect the home closer, an adult female pit bull dog, growling viciously, ran straight out of the front door of the home to attack the officer.
The officer shot the dog. The officer then found another pit bull dog in the residence as well. Animal control was contacted and they took possession of the dogs. A witness to the shooting was a man who lived across the street. He said the officer had no choice but the shoot the dog. He said he knew the dog to be vicious, especially toward other dogs.Labels: police shooting
