DogsBite logo   Over 150 dog breeds populate the US. Studies show that two breeds account for nearly 70% of bites that end in death and serious injury. We must regulate these breeds or risk the safety of our families and pets.

Flashback: The Amaya Hess Video Story

DogsBite.org - We recently published part of Amaya's story. We wrote as much as we could without falling to pieces. Her attack took place in 2006, as she was nestled in a baby stroller being pushed by her mother. Upon entering the yard of Mark Hamilton, Amaya's mother spoke briefly to Hamilton's nephew. Then a pit bull flew out the door and latched onto Amaya's head.

The pit bull had Amaya's head in it's mouth for 5-8 minutes. After the claw end of a hammer was used to pry open the dog's jaws, half of Amaya's scalp was missing, her right eye was out of its socket and her right ear was torn from the side of her head. You can learn more about her story here. The video depicts a glimpse into her recovery, two years later.

"At this time, there is very little chance of recovering anything through a lawsuit against the owner of the dog"

I'm in favor of Debtor's prisons for these situations.... You wanna play lion tamer without the requisite containment infrastructure, you gotta pay!

Which in the state of Ohio -- that mandates pit bull liability insurance of $100,000 for all pit bulls -- equals $65 per month with a $5,000 deductible. Mind you, this is for a pit bull that is sterilized AND does not have a bite record.

This is the cost to insure a pit bull for a $100,000 liability policy. This amount can hardly cover the cost of Amaya's medical bills. BASE cost for pit bull liability coverage should start at $250,000, a quarter of a million dollars.
