Charlotte's Parents Recount Devastating Pit Bull Attack
Parents See 5 Years of Surgery AheadOmaha, NE - In a powerful video, the parents of Charlotte speak about the red wagon and the scalp missing from their child's head. Wendy and her 15-month-old daughter went to a friend's house for a play date. They placed the kids in the wagon and as Wendy states, "We were just going for a walk."
The four proceeded down the street, and when they came to the intersection, they saw the pit bull and stopped. They watched the pit bull grow "curious," slip out of its collar and walk toward them. As soon as the dog reached the wagon, he pounced the child latching onto her shoulder then neck. Wendy states: "He knew what he was doing. He knew what he was doing. He went after the kids."
Wendy, who was once a zookeeper, says she pulled the pit bull off the kids as the dog's owner stood by. "I got the back end of the dog -- grabbed his neck and ears -- and was swaying his head -- and the owner was standing there maybe two feet with the leash." (The pit bull owner has told reporters that Wendy "blocked" her from getting her dog).
The dog bit Wendy's face and neck, and her knees were badly scraped, but she was more worried about Charlotte, who was in critical condition after the dog tore off part of her scalp. As Wendy was climbing into the ambulance, she asked herself, "how are they [the doctors] going to fix this? It was so big... so big." The family is anticipating 5 long years of medical treatment for Charlotte.
