DogsBite logo   Over 150 dog breeds populate the US. Studies show that two breeds account for nearly 70% of bites that end in death and serious injury. We must regulate these breeds or risk the safety of our families and pets.

Fatality 2008: No Charges in Weslaco Fatal Dog Attack

CPS: A Loss of Common Sense:
Weslaco, TX - Charges will not be brought against the owner of a pit bull that mauled his 5-year-old nephew to death. Investigators said they found no signs of negligence. Texas investigators, including Child Protection Services (CPS), should pick up a newspaper and learn about the nine last dog attack fatalities in Texas -- eight attributed to pit bulls. It's incredulous that CPS placed this boy into a home with two pit bull dogs.

Witnesses said that the pit bull, Greco, flew into a rage at a dog that was walking past the family's home that night and then tackled Pablo Lopez as he walked out the back door. Witnesses said the dog tore at the boy's torso and neck, quickly killing him. Pablo's uncle offers the common cliche, "All the time the dog is real nice, but this is the first time and the last time, too." Herein lies the cruelty of pit bull injury:
First attacks can lead to death; they nearly always lead to severe injury.
In this instance, it appears that Greco snapped into "fight mode" upon seeing a loose dog. The animal then "redirected" the attack onto Pablo killing him. Other dogs breeds hardly display this behavior. This is because few other breeds were selectively bred to fight. Child Protection Services has known about the lethal threat pit bulls pose to children for at least 15 years. Still, it was okay to place this boy in a home with two of these dogs.

The aunt and uncle have blood on their hands....they are responsible for the death of that child. If you left a loaded gun on the table, and a child shot himself with it, there would be charges. A pit bull is a loaded gun.

Who in their right mind thinks a pit bull does not pose a risk to a small child? How can anyone claim they "couldn't forsee" that a pit bull type dog may maul or kill a child? Its like claimimg you "couldn't forsee" that a child might fall into a swimming pool and drown.

Why weren't they charged with child endangerment?

There. We have it. No consequences for anyone. No triggering of Lillian's Law. No accountability for CPS sticking a kid with pit bulls. Zero - Nada - Zilch. Shove the kid in the ground and let's get back to letting the pit bull lobby conduct business as usual.

Epitaph for a 5 year old: "I'm a statistic. Like those before me, others will follow. Move on."

Yep...Pablo was the 12th Texan killed by a Pit Bull in the last two years. Nine of the victims were children!

Now CPS will conduct an investigation on itself and the Pit Lobby will hope this incident fades from memory.

Texas is on pace for 60 plus citizens to be shredded to death over the next decade. About 45 will be children.

When will the Texas Legislature stop being "Stuck on Stupid"?!

Another Texas attack:

Read the comments, Roy doesn't think a dog is dangerous just because it bites someone. Also, where did the pit bull loving community ever get the idea that if you beat any dog or tie it up it will automatically become vicous, and that this is the reason why any pit bull attacks? There is so much wrong with that thinking, the first being how quickly they turn on their own in order to excuse the breed.
