DogsBite logo   Over 150 dog breeds populate the US. Studies show that two breeds account for nearly 70% of bites that end in death and serious injury. We must regulate these breeds or risk the safety of our families and pets.

Flashback: Pit Bull Kills Puppy at Omaha PetSmart

Pit Bull in PetSmart Kills Puppy on Video
Omaha, NE - Last year, on April 18th, 2007, the owners of a golden retriever said they watched a pit bull attack and kill their puppy at an Omaha PetSmart. Jessica Rosenthal said both her puppy and the pit bull had been dropped off for grooming services. She said she had just arrived to pick up her pup when the pit bull broke out of its kennel and attacked the puppy.

Instead of impoundment, the judge ordered the Nebraska Humane Society to return the pit bull to its owner (so that it could kill another dog or perhaps a child). NHS Vice President of field operations Mark Langan said that even though the pit bull's owners weren't there at the time of the attack, they would be ticketed for harboring a dangerous animal.

Langan said investigators have not yet determined whether PetsMart faces any liability. The attack was caught on videotape inside the store, and Langan said officials will continue to analyze the images. PetsMart said it is investigating, too. A representative said the pit bull should never have been able to get out of the kennel.
The following year, PetSmart adopts a "No Pit Bull" policy for doggie daycare centers nationwide.
The genetic trait of animal-aggression in pit bulls is unacceptable.

This wasn't the first such incident for Petsmart. A Yorkie puppy was killed by a Staffordshire (aka: pit) in 2005, while waiting in line at a veterinary clinic inside the Arlington Heights, IL, PetSmart.
