Flashback: Pit Bulls Scalp Man in Guyana
Ruinous Scalp AttackGuyana - On June 16th, 2008, the country of Guyana banned the importation of pit bulls. The catastrophic maulings that were occurring at a high rate finally moved government officials to
do something. The law, however, does not address existing pit bulls in Guyana, nor does it reduce the threat of these remaining dogs to citizens.
Of the several cases we have reviewed, the situation in Guyana is deadly and chalk full of frustrating SPCA issues and arcane dog laws -- both of which benefit pit bull owners and not the victims. The South American country of Guyana is one more example of the collective damage pit bulls inflict on human beings. Name a country and DogsBite.org can likely name a similar scenario.
The pit bull problem is worldwide, and it continues to explode.
Countries across the globe have recognized the deadly threat pit bull type dogs pose to people since the early 90s. As a consequence, more and more countries ban the importation of pit bulls and try to regulate existing pit bulls through mandatory sterilization and muzzle laws. The common goal throughout is to dramatically reduce the number of these dogs.
We bring you the story of this Guyana man to show you that in addition to pit bulls ripping off the scalps of toddlers and grandmothers, they do so to grown men as well. Prior to the attack on this man, a
jogger was attacked by a pit bull and flown out of the county for medical treatment. It was also a close-call for the field worker. Doctors at Georgetown Public Hospital fought for hours to save his life.
Hospital workers were shocked at his injuries. His entire scalp had been ripped away exposing his bloodied skull (pictured) and his right arm was severely injured. It is reported that he was attacked by three pit bulls that entered through a fence slot from the neighboring property. This victim will likely not have access to medicine innovations to treat his wounds, such as:
tissue expansion and
skin grafting.
