Pit Bull Owner Getting More "Scary" Dogs
UPDATE 06/12/08: Short was ultimately fined $550 for failing to restrain his dogs and several other violations. Both of his dogs, Dozer and Rusty, have since been laid to rest -- neither were suitable for adoption. Short could have gotten Rusty back. But Short's mother owns the property where he lives. She laid down an ultimatum: either the dogs went or he would.

Short is currently in the process of installing fence posts in his front yard. The dogs won't be his last, he said. "I'll get another dog. For sure, I'll get another dog. Two of them," Short said. "There's nothing wrong with pit bulls. They're good dogs, but they do take a little bit more on (the) aspect of taking care of them. You watch," he added, "My next one's gonna be really scary."

Anchorage, AK - When Valerie Reinecke saw her 4-year-old cat Brodie dead in the street Sunday morning in front of her South Anchorage home, she thought he had been hit by a car. But her home surveillance system told a different tale. The surveillance pictures show a furious scene unfolded in the driveway and front yard as Brodie frantically whizzed back and forth, two pit bulls in pursuit.

Brodie was fast. But the dogs were faster. Quickly, one of the dogs, the cat clamped in its jaws, finished Brodie off and dumped her on the front lawn. Reinecke said the issue was so bad Sunday morning, when she first altered animal control and police, that after the cat was dead, her daughter went to pick it up and the dogs charged her too. "This is a safety issue; there are children in this neighborhood."

Neighbors say the dogs had been a problem for people and pets before, but this time Reinecke and her son-in-law, Ricky McElroy, started posting fliers with the warning, 2 dogs are terrorizing our neighborhood. They traced the dogs back to a mobile home on an unfenced lot two blocks away. Owner Chris Short, 35, said the dogs, Rusty and Dozer, are generally good animals that escaped and went wild that morning.

It's not the first time they've escaped, he said, but they had never killed anything before. He faults himself for leaving for work without locking them in their kennel, allowing them to escape when his kids opened the front door. "She's mad her cat died. I'd be mad too. He viciously attacked that cat," he said. That's his nature though. I should have been more responsible with keeping them in the kennel."

As we have stated many times on DogsBite.org it is not okay that pit bulls are animal-aggressive.

This selective breeding trait ensures the continued maiming and killing of our pets. It also ensures the killing of more pit bulls. Short voluntarily brought Rusty to the pound so he could be quarantined as a safety precaution. He is not planning to get him out of the pound when it's over in about two weeks either. Too much of a problem, he said. Animal control fined him $75 bucks.
