DogsBite logo   Over 150 dog breeds populate the US. Studies show that two breeds account for nearly 70% of bites that end in death and serious injury. We must regulate these breeds or risk the safety of our families and pets.

Omaha Toddler to Undergo Tissue Expansion

Pit Bull Injury Forces Medical Innovation
Omaha, NE - As in the case of Amaya Hess -- and many other victims that suffered severe scalp injury due to pit bulls -- the 15-month-old Omaha girl will face several years of surgeries. Dr. Amardip Bhuller said Charlotte Blevins underwent about two-and-a-half hours of surgery at Creighton University Medical Center.
"She basically got scalped by the dog," Bhuller said.
Pictured is Amaya Hess two years after a pit bull violently attacked her while being pushed by her mother in a stroller. Hess is still undergoing the innovative procedure known as "tissue expansion" with bio-engineered tissue to repair her scalp. This may be exactly what Charlotte Blevins and her family are facing. Pit bull injury is not for the squeamish.

Charlotte's scalp was immediately put on ice, so Bhuller was able to cover 80 percent of the wound with real tissue. Skin that is torn off shrinks, he said, and that is why the entire area could not be covered. He said he would not use any artificial skin early in the process (such as bio-engineered tissue). Skin grafts may be an alternative to artificial skin as well.
Skin grafts, tissue expansion and prosthetics -- pit bull injury.
A skin graft involves removing healthy skin from one area of the body and placing it onto another area of the body that has been severely damaged. "Tissue expansion" involves placing small balloons under a scalp to expand the hair-bearing tissue and cover the remaining area with that tissue. Neither procedure sounds pretty and neither is.

I really think that small children seem to trigger the fighting instinct/prey drive in a lot of these dogs.

I just wonder what it will take to bring this to a stop.

I really don't know, David. Society has made it clear...the death of a few children is a small price to pay to preserve the ability of Americans to own and breed this type of animal as a "pet", without restrictions.

I would almost like to say that Americans value animal life over childrens, but that not a fair description either, since these dogs kill so many other domesticated animals each year, anyone who truly loves animals wants to regulate them for the danger they pose to dogs, horses, livestock, etc.

I guess I put most of the blame for the dead and mutilated children on the so-called "humane" groups who continue to promote these dogs as famly pets, and help the dog fighters and criminals by fighting against all reasonable regulation of breeding. I no longer donate to any shelter groups, I limit my donations to breed-specific rescue groups for my dog's breed.... they spend lots of time educating and screening potential adopters, and really presenting the dogs the offer HONESTLY, including any negative behaviors....unlike the pit bull rescue groups who simply, relentlessly, oversell all of these dogs to unsuspecting adopters.

I wish everyone in a city like Omaha or Indianapolis could be in the same room with both these little girls. We would have these dogs spayed and neutered out in a dog generation. The denial among the pit bullers is almost deranged
