Pit Bull in Greensburg Chews Off Owners Arm
Violent, Sustained Attack Greensburg, IN - A few days ago, a Greensburg woman was viciously attacked by her own dog: a pit bull. It was a sustained attack -- an attack lasting over 15 minutes -- and the victim Annette Williams suffered an amputation. The question remains whether she will suffer multiple amputations. Williams is currently in critical condition at Methodist Hospital.
A neighbor initially heard Annette Williams' faint cry for help, but by the time help arrived, Williams had been on the ground in her backyard for more than an hour. Lieutenant Larry Dance of the Greensburg Police Department said one of the officers who has been on with this department for over 30 years, and is a Vietnam vet, described it has the "worst thing he's seen."
Neighbors said the dog, a pit bull named Toby, continued to circle Williams keeping her rescuers away until an officer shot the dog. "She was, like, in the middle of the yard. She was up. If they went in, that dog would have tore them up," said neighbor Shirley Hines. Neighbor Stephen "Pete" Roszell said that Williams' left arm has been amputated just above the elbow.
Neighbors said Williams raised Toby since he was puppy and nobody ever witnessed any aggression. Hines said that Toby was taking obedience classes on the weekends. Police and neighbors aren't sure why the dog would turn on Williams. Police said they've never received a report about Toby attacking anyone else in the community.
Pit bulls do not need a reason to attack. Unpredictability and the inclination to attack are genetic traits within pit bulls. Please note: In the comment section at DogsBite.org, you will find people who are unsympathetic to pit bull owners that are attacked by their own dog and suffer massive injury. The reasoning is simple. The only thing worse than reporting that a pit bull has violently attacked its owner and caused serious injury or death is when a pit bull unleashes the same actions on an innocent person.
Pit bull owners are not innocent. They may be "well-intentioned" and hope that "lots of love" can alter the genetic make up of their dog, but they are not innocent. Pit bulls have been tearing off arms, legs and faces for over twenty years and every pit bull owner knows this. DogsBite.org publishes these stories in hopes that a person who may be considering owning a pit bull -- reconsiders immediately.

It is refreshing when an adult pit owner takes one for the Darwin team, instead of an innocent human or unlucky dog that happens to trigger centuries of fighting genes.

Update: This disloyal Pit Bull had previously bitten the woman and her husband had urged her to euthanize it.

I wonder if this woman had spent time bombarding the internet with "My sweet Pitbull" stories and "It's the owner" propaganda.

My father was in the ICU at Methodist at the same time as this poor woman. My father passed away June 24th. The last time I spoke with this woman's husband, it was looking as if she was going to lose the other arm, but he was more worried that she still might not survive. And yes, this wasn't the first time the dog attacked her. I've been keeping them in my thoughts and prayers. I have no idea what has happened since then.
