Pit Bull in Greensburg, Indiana Chews Off Owners Arm
Loss of Both ArmsUPDATE 07/01/08: It has been reported that Annette Williams has had both arms amputated just below the elbow. While Williams is out of the intensive care unit and in a regular room at Methodist Hospital, she still has open wounds that need drained. After that, there will be multiple skin graft surgeries and the bitter reality that her "independence" is forever gone.
06/19/08: Violent, Sustained AttackGreensburg, IN - It was reported several days ago that a Greensburg woman was badly mauled by her own pit bull. It was a sustained attack -- an attack lasting over 15 minutes. The victim, Annette Williams, suffered the loss of one arm. Doctors are still unsure whether she will suffer the loss of the other. Williams is currently in critical condition at Methodist Hospital.
Laura Irvine, who had been leaving a nearby home, initially heard Williams' faint cry for help, but by the time help arrived, Williams had been lying on the bloodstained lawn in her backyard for over an hour. When police arrived, they were forced to shoot the dog, which had continued to act aggressively.
With the dog dead, paramedics could finally access the yard to help Williams. Irvine said Williams and her husband had raised the 3 to 5-year-old male pit bull since it was a puppy. As she tried to comfort Williams, the woman told Irvine she let him out like she did every morning, but this time, he turned on her and attacked. The viciousness of the attack was evident to anyone who was at the scene. Heating said the pit bull did not "merely attack his owner."
"The dog was literally eating her to death," he said.
Irvine said she had never seen anything like it and hoped this served as a wake up call to people who keep these animals as pets. Irvine said despite the fact it was a vision she may never forget, she wasn’t leaving Williams until help arrived. "It was just a mess, blood everywhere, bones, bones sticking out of her flesh, and it wasn’t just bites, it was just chunks taken out," she said.
