DogsBite logo   Over 150 dog breeds populate the US. Studies show that two breeds account for nearly 70% of bites that end in death and serious injury. We must regulate these breeds or risk the safety of our families and pets.

Spokane Toddler Mauled by Family Pit Bull-Mix, Mom Skips Hospital

Mom Fears "Getting in Trouble"
Spokane, WA - Spokane is back in the news, this time regarding a tragedy with the magnitude of a bomb. In the middle of the night, while sleeping next to an 8 to 12-week old pit bull puppy, a 1-year old child was severely mauled. Because the mother believed she would "get in trouble," she did not take her child to the hospital. She instead cleaned an estimated 100 puncture wounds.

Police came to the home Sunday after neighbors informed them that a 1-year old had been mauled by a young pit bull-mix, but the child was not taken to the hospital for treatment. According to an SVPD release, "Thinking she might be in trouble, the mother and a neighbor cleaned the estimated 100 puncture wounds at the home rather than seeking treatment from doctors."

The child had been sleeping with the pit bull-mix puppy when he was attacked in the middle of the night and the mother found countless bites and blood staining her son's sheets. The responding officer looked over the attack victim and found "numerous injuries to his ears, face and hands," according to the police, with the worst of those injuries affecting his now swollen ears.

The officer instructed the mother to take the boy to the hospital, where he was treated with intravenous antibiotics. "Child Protection Services staff was notified of the incident and contacted the family at the hospital," SVPD said. "The matter remains under investigation."

Sounds like Mommie Dearest is heading for a little well deserved jail time on this one.

I think there is a definite link between criminal child endangerment, abuse and neglect, and the presence of pit bulls in the home. There is such a strong correlation between ownership of these dogs and drug use, violence, etc., DYS should always consider these dogs in the home to be a warning sign.
