2008 Fatality: Mississippi 3-Year Old Boy Killed by Pit Bull
Child Identified as Tony Evans Jr.UPDATE 07/23/08: The 3-year old boy has been identified as Tony Evans Jr. The attack occurred as Tony was playing with friends across the street from his home. Because the pit bull was on-property and restrained (chained) during the attack, the dog owner faces no penalties. Blue Eyes is free to return home after the 10-day observation so that it can attack and kill again.
07/23/08: Homeowners Being QuestionedPolice are questioning Shannon and Shaunda Reason, the owners of the home and dog named Blue Eyes. The attack occurred when the boy wandered from the front yard into the carport. As the child made the corner toward the back of the house, he met the dog face-to-face. The 2 1/2-year-old pit bull bit into the boy's neck and upper torso and dragged him inside its doghouse where he died.
Down the street, Isaac Stuckley said he heard the attack and thought someone had been shot or stabbed. He said the Reasons keep three pit bulls. Stuckley said there had been a large gathering in front of the home before the attack. Stuckley owns a pit bull as well, but he says it's for safety reasons. "That child didn't even have a chance," he said. "The whole thing makes me sick to my stomach."
07/23/08: Details Remain SparseJackson, MS - In a developing story, a 3-year-old boy was killed Tuesday night in south Jackson after he was grabbed and mauled by a chained pit bull. The boy, whom police are not identifying, was taken to the University of Mississippi Medical Center.
No one else was injured.
Police spokesman Sgt. Jeffery Scott said police had to open fire on the animal because it charged animal control officers.
Police are still investigating -- no charges have been filed.
Just a few days ago in Mississippi, a woman received
1,600 stitches after a pit bull snapped its chain and bit into her leg. The incident occurred in Itta Bena. Becky Lee Grimes was attacked as she was walking through a frequently used shortcut. It took first responders three hours to catch the dog; a fireman was also bitten in the process. The case is still under investigation...
