Omaha Victim Has Slight Eye Set Back After Third Surgery

Omaha, NE - Charlotte Blevins, the little Omaha girl who had part of her scalp torn off by a pit bull, was sporting a pair of shades on her way to church this past Sunday to reduce light sensitivity resulting from an eye infection. The irritation and swelling in her left eye followed her recent and third surgery to address her scalp injury.

Wendy Blevins, Charlotte's mother said Sunday proved to be the family's most sleepless morning since her release from the hospital. The 16-month-old, who lost one-third of her scalp during the dog attack, kept jumping awake and grabbing her injured arm. Her mother said she hoped Charlotte's distress didn't mark the start of night terrors resulting from the incident.

Overall Blevins viewed her daughter's progress as positive. The ripped-away scalp that was recovered from the attack site covered 80 percent of the child's head wound. Last week surgeons found that the reattached portion had melded successfully. Instead of skin grafting, synthetic skin was placed over the remaining portion of the wound, about the size of a 50-cent piece.
