Dogfighting Operation Busted; All Seized Dogs Euthanized
Milwaukee Man ChargedMilwaukee, WI - A man faces dogfighting charges after police investigating illegal drugs discovered the operation. Animal control officers took six pit bulls and five puppies from the residence. All 11 were euthanized. Police said that the basement had a fighting ring laced with blood and a treadmill. Some dogs had marks on them consistent with fighting.
Charges filed against Steve Blackmon, 40, include instigating animal fights and training animals for fights. Blackmon allegedly ran the "Grim Reaper Kennels" out of his basement. The accused man denied the charges, telling news reporters that the dogs were used for pulling contests, not fighting (a common defense). He's also charged with maintaining a drug trafficking place and possessing cocaine with intent to deliver.
Sensible response on the part of Milwaukee Animal Control.
