In the 3-year period from 2006 to 2008, pit bull type dogs killed 52 Americans and accounted for 59% of all fatal attacks. Combined, pit bulls and rottweilers accounted for 73% of these deaths. | More »
Proactive Policy Works Council Bluffs, IW - The day after Charlotte Blevins was seriously attacked by a pit bull in Omaha, KETV7 -- the TV station that serves both Council Bluffs and Omaha -- created a news segment about the success of Council Bluffs' pit bull ban. The ban was enacted in 2005. In 2004, before the ban, there were 29 attacks. Subsequent years include: 2005 (12 attacks,) 2006 (6 attacks), 2007 (2 attacks) and 2008 (0 attacks).
Pit bull advocates consistently say that pit bull bans and other regulations do not work. This is untrue. Breed bans have dramatically reduced attacks in Denver, Council Bluffs, Ontario, Aurora and other cities. Within 18 months of enactment, San Francisco's pit bull sterilization law showed a 21% decline in pit bull impoundments; shelter occupancy rates fell from 3/4 to 1/4 and pit bull euthanizations dropped 24%.

This is not only a public safety issue, since the pit bull community also consumes the lion's share of animal control resources in most places. They definitely aren't paying for it.
They are like ticks and drunk drivers.
by mrs.Poodle9/15/2008 7:31 AM | Flag as abusive In Holland the BSL didn't really work. The reason was: American Bulldogs, American and English Staffordshire Terriers weren't considered pitbulls. Don't ask me why. But it gave people a way out by obtaining false papers for their pits.
However, it did help a little because price-winning fighting dogs were kept of the streets as they usually have no papers and are worth money. So the owners didn't want to risk loosing them. They used to walk them at night. Now that the BSL is gone, they can show up anytime in our dogparks and there is nothing you can do about it besides leaving a.s.a.p.
