Pit Bull Type Dog Bites Five School Children Returning from Recess

4 Treated with Minor Injuries
Port Hurdon, MI - In what police are calling a dog that "appears to be a pit bull," the animal bit five third graders yesterday at Howard D Crull Elementary School. According to Port Huron police Lt. Dennis Maurey, four of the children were treated for minor injuries at Port Huron Hospital. Animal Control Officer Dan Woodruff captured the dog. The dog did not have tags or any other identification, he said.

The names of the children were not released. The attack happened about 12:30 p.m. as third-graders were coming in from recess, Crull Principal Debra Barr said. "A dog appeared on our playground during our last lunch recess," Barr said. "It became aggressive and as the noon staff (was) moving children into the school...children were bit."

The children and the school are very fortunate a serious mauling was avoided.
