Times-Gazette Writer: Pit Bulls Create Havoc
Potential Killers In Our MidstShelbyville, TN - A writer for the Times-Gazette, a Tennessee-based newspaper, speaks up about pit bulls. David Melson asks common sense questions. The only change we might make is that he replace the word "defiant" with "bizarre." The presiding logic of pit bull advocates seems to be: I have a right to my dog; you don't have a right to your
face,
leg or
arm, or to
stand in your yard.
Almost every day, I hear calls over the police scanner concerning pit bulls attacking other dogs, biting people, or pinning people inside their homes or cars. Could it be time to ban pit bulls outright? Yes, I realize some of 'em are supposedly friendly. I realize some are allegedly tame, and some are like members of the family. But so many pit bulls are potential killers.
With so many other people-friendly breeds of all shapes and sizes around, what exactly is the allure of a pit bull? And why are some people so defensive -- "defiant" may be a better word -- when the potential problems surrounding pit bulls are mentioned? I'm very much a dog lover, but I'm not so sure there's a place in society for an breed which would apparently have no problem killing any of us.
And when cops have to be called daily, something needs to be done.
