Pit Bull-Mix on Cat Killing Spree in Centerville

Cat Owners Continually Suffer
Centerville, GA - The city's animal control operation succeeded in trapping a large black dog suspected of mauling up to five cats in a residential area. Capt. Garrett Cooley said the 60-pound dog, which appeared to be a pit bull lab-mix, was caught in a cage in a trap set near to where Melissa Carter reported two of her cats were attacked in her yard in separate incidents. One was killed and the other seriously injured.

She told police she had seen a black dog at least twice in the area and heard barking and snarling during the early morning hours. The dog captured today entered the cage in the wee hours of the morning. Police are looking for at least two other dogs believed to be roaming the neighborhood. The bodies of three mauled cats have been discovered recently -- on Linda Drive, on Virginia Drive and on Davis Drive.

Commenters at the original news story blamed cat owners. The difference between a loose cat and a loose pit bull-mix are profound in terms of public safety resources. A loose cat may climb up a tree requiring a fire department to get it down. A loose pit bull-mix is apt to kill cats, dogs, horses and other animals. It may also require police units armed in riot gear, an ambulance or two and a LifeFlight helicopter.
