2008 Fatality: 2-Year Old Boy Killed in Clark County, Nevada
Alexander Adams, 2-Years OldUPDATE 12/03/08: Las Vegas police spokesman Bill Cassell could offer no viable theory as to why the family pit bull (or pit bull mix) killed the 2-year old child. He said Alexander's grandmother was walking with the dog's food bowl into a room where the dog was normally fed. The toddler followed his grandmother into the room, and that is when the attack happened. Though food may have played a role, there is no certainly as to what triggered the attack.
Unpredictable aggression is well documented in the pit bull breed.
Police have largely wrapped up their investigation and are submitting the results to the Clark County district attorney's office to see whether charges are warranted. It was not known if animal control authorities had ever previously dealt with the dogs in this latest case. City of Las Vegas spokeswoman Diana Paul said animal control officials would not be answering any questions regarding the case, and she forwarded all questions to Las Vegas police.
Animal control officials will ultimately determine what to do with the two dogs. 11/28/08: Dogs Described as Pit Bull-MixesLas Vegas police spokesman Bill Cassell said Thursday that one of the dogs, and possibly the second, were involved in the fatal mauling. He said the dogs looked like pit bulls. "They were at least pit bull mixes," he said. A
separate article describes the dogs as 40-45lb terrier mixes, which certainly fits a pit bull-mix profile. Pit bull owners and animal agencies
intentionally mislabel pit bulls as boxer-mixes, lab-mixes and others in order to hide the truth about the breed.
11/27/08: Second Fatal Attack in Clark CountyLas Vegas, NV - In a developing story, a 2-year-old boy was fatally attacked by at least one dog at his home, according to Las Vegas police. Bill Cassell, a spokesman with the Metropolitan Police Department, said the boy and his younger brother were being taken care of by their grandmother when the 2-year-old was attacked by one, or perhaps both, of the family's
mix-breed terriers. Cassell said the dogs also might be a pit bull type dog.
Alert: potential "mixed breed" cover up may follow.
Cassell said the boy's parents were not home at the time of the attack. He declined to give out details of how the attack occurred, or how many times the child was bitten. He simply told reporters that the child was dead by the time medical personnel and police arrived at the home. Preliminary information indicates the parents had no history with Clark County Family Services and the boy seemed to come from a "good, upstanding family."
On September 12, 4-month-old Cenedi Kia Carey was fatally mauled by her family's pit bulls in North Las Vegas. In that incident, the child was also in the care of her grandmother.Related articles:10/07/08:
