Summary: According to Walnut Cove Police Chief James Hill, a Walnut Cove K-9 was injured Tuesday when a pit bull that belonged to a woman who police had pulled over for a routine traffic stop attacked the animal. Hill said drug Officer Sgt. Chad Williams was attempting to do a sweep of the vehicle when the dog attacked. Officers fatally wounded the dog, but not before it inflicted injuries on the K-9. Summary: A Prineville man shot and killed his neighbor's off leash pit bull -- he says out of self-defense. An investigation has been launched and so far has led to a citation for second-degree animal abuse. The shooter, Stuart Huggins, said he was concerned about his beloved dog, Barney. "The other two dogs, when I hollered at them, they backed off. The pit bull was not going to back off. He was about ready to clamp down on my dog, so I shot him."

#380: Shelby Police Kill Another Pit Bull

Summary: For the second time in two weeks, a police officer shot and killed a charging dog. Sgt. Vic Haynes' report of the incident read that the dog was initially not aggressive and allowed Haynes to pet it. Haynes then went to find the owner at which time the dog "became very aggressive." After the dog charged a man on the street, Haynes fired several shotgun rounds, killing the pit bull. "I had no other choice but to end threat to the public," the report read.

Summary: A man shot and killed a pit bull that bit a teenage girl in Pittsburgh. Police told reporters that the man who shot the dog said the animal bit the girl in the ankle, entered his yard and charged him. "It was running at me full speed," Sockwell said. "I wasn't going to be the next one." A separate article says that the dog had previously bitten Sockwell's wife and the mailman. No charges will be filed against Sockwell, who is licensed to carry a firearm.

Summary: Witnesses told the deputy that a pit bull had bitten a 5-year old boy on the leg. According to eyewitnesses, after biting the boy the dog chased another man and went at the child's father, who then shot and killed the animal. The incident was ruled self defense. The family that owned the dog chose not to speak about the incident. The family whose boy was attacked by the dog took their child to a doctor.

#384: 2 Family Pit Bulls Killed After Attacking Sisters

Summary: Three pet pit bulls turned on two sisters biting and chasing them until police were called. An infant on the scene was not hurt. The 22-year-old woman said the dogs became unruly when her 17-year old sister tripped over one of them. The dog's behavior "flipped" and the animals began to attack the women. The 17-year-old locked herself in a bedroom and was later pulled out by police. Officers killed two of the dogs and tasered the third. Both sisters were treated for serious injuries.

#385: Police Shoot Pit Bull in Smyrna

Summary: A Smyrna woman was arrested Wednesday and her dog was shot dead after she sicced it on officers serving an arrest warrant on her, authorities said. Lydia Parvanta, 26, reportedly turned her pit bull on two Smyrna police officers and a Cobb County sheriff’s deputy when they came to her residence to seek her surrender on a simple battery warrant. As the dog charged a Smyrna officer, he shot it. The dog died immediately.
