Please Support Montana Representative Robyn Driscoll's House Bill 191
Legislators Cave to PressureUPDATE 01/21/09: Amidst the backdrop of pit bull advocates and legislators other than Robyn Driscoll unwilling to stand up to them, House Bill 191 was defeated. Lawmakers "started" discussing the possibility of a substitute plan to increase penalties on the owners of vicious dogs. What they fail to realize is that these very pit bull forces will try to sabotage a "non breed-specific" vicious dog law as well. This is exactly what occurred with Lillian's Law in Texas. Hats off to Robyn Driscoll for being a Montana trailblazer!01/20/09: House Bill 191 Introduced by Robyn DriscollDear residents of Montana, please contact each and every member of the Montana State Legislature’s Local Government Committee, listed below, to express your support for Montana State Representative Robyn Discroll’s House Bill 191 to address the issue of pit bulls in Montana. It is very important that your voice be heard to counter the unfair and unethical organized lobbying efforts of the pro-pit bull lobby. The hearing for this bill is Thursday, January 22 at 3:00 PM. It is critical that you contact these legislators prior to the hearing. The pro-pit bull advocates have activated their usual lobbying efforts by organizing their efforts through mass emails to their supporters, giving them directions to flood the Montana Capital with their emails, letters, and phone calls to the members of the Local Government Committee. As DogsBite.org has seen over and over again, these lobbying efforts are highly suspect and also result in public officials having their lives threatened. One must ask several important questions about these lobbying efforts: - Who are these individuals? Several jurisdictions have reported that emails sent are suspect because efforts to respond have resulted in discovering that the majority of the email addresses are bogus. This is suspicious and is some evidence that these lobbying efforts are being made by only a few individuals, attempting to provide a false impression of massive opposition from across the country that is self-motivated by each individual with a separate email address.
- What is the funding source for these lobbying efforts? Is it possible that dogfighters are funding these efforts -- either with or without the knowledge of the lobbying group? For instance, do they accept "blind donations" of $$?
- What are the connections of these lobbyists? Do these lobbyists have any connection to pit bull breeders who, in any way, support irresponsible training techniques, irresponsible ownership, or are on the payroll of dogfighters?
- The AKC legislative alerts. Organizations such as the AKC have "legislative alerts" they send out that includes directions on how to send correspondence that doesn’t appear to be a "cut and paste" letter. As the AKC is responsible for the attempts to legitimize these dogs by recognizing the American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, they have some morale culpability for innocent families believing their propaganda that these dogs are "safe".
Please tell these legislators that there are Americans who know the truth about pit bulls -- people who are either victims, or are the friend, family member, or loved one of victims or potential victims. Tell them your own story; tell them to be suspicious of the pro-pit bull lobbyists. Tell them about the successes of legislation and litigation that crosses the U.S. Also, encourage them to read the truth at www.DogsBite.org. P.S. -- If you have information relating to or know of any pit bull attacks on horses or other livestock, please emphasize the dangers pit bulls pose to Montana ranchers!Local Government CommitteeMontana House Bill 191 is scheduled for consideration by the House Local Government Committee on Thursday, January 22, at 3:00 PM, in room 172 of the Montana State Capitol building, 1301 East Sixth Avenue in Helena. The dog fighter and breeder lobbying groups also use innocent-sounding names to hide their interests behind
such as "responsible owner" groups, etc

Didn't know where to post ths...but its important. The Montana proposal to ban pit bulls was defeated; the state rep who sponsored the bill, Robyn Driscoll, had her life threatened by "pit bull lovers"

Several of the e-mails Driscoll received contained crude slurs and profanity.
"You should have been euthanized in our crib. Drop dead," read part of one e-mail from an anonymous pit bull advocate.
"Hey, I was born and raised in Montana, and I'm a registered sex offender. Maybe we can both be photographed" and posted on the offender registry together, wrote another.
"You damage me and mine, and you're going to pay a price. No brag, just fact," wrote Roger Stephens, of Roundup.
I think its gives us a very good picture of who our legislators are protecting by not regulating these dogs, huh?

When word got out that the bill was Driscoll's, pit bull owners clogged her voice mail and peppered her e-mail with physical threats if she didn't rescind the proposal, which was heard Thursday as House Bill 191 in the House Local Government Committee in Helena.
In the days leading up to the hearing, the chamber's security force assigned guards to protect Driscoll and Local Government Committee members from attacks by dog owners.

“We know by experience here at the shelter that pit bulls are definitely climbers,” Dawson said. “They can climb a chain-link fence without much difficulty. You almost have to have a lid on it to ensure they will stay in.”
