Comment: Criminal Logic of Pit Bull Owner

DogsBite.org - A commenter recently left a response to a story about a pit bull owner that accused leashed, "barking" Chihuahuas of causing her loose pit bulls to attack. One of the Chihuahuas was killed in the attack. The owner of the victimized dogs, 59-year-old Sharry Brewer, suffered injury as well.
Most pit bull owners will never understand there is no defense for these attacks. It's much like the irrational claims of at fault drivers in rear end collisions. "They could have gone around the pedestrian instead of hitting the brakes; they should have seen I was right behind them." Implying the pedestrian's safety should have been compromised to the benefit of the tailgater. Or, there are the accused murder suspects who deny guilt because the murder victim didn't cooperate during the course of an armed robbery. "I didn't set out to kill nobody..." And now there are pit bull owners who blame the victims because they had pets with them. Or, they somehow provoked the pit bull. Or, they didn't behave a particular way at the onset or during the attack.

The common thread...All criminals with criminal "logic."

Comment: Rehabilitation is Too Risky

A reader left a comment that speaks to a number of serious issues: the risk of rehabilitating dangerous dogs; naïve "rescue" pit bull owners; experiencing an unprovoked pit bull attack and the failure to trust his own instincts. This commenter is not alone in failing to trust his instincts -- ask Wendy Blevins. Mankind's rich and extended relationship with dogs leads all of us to believe that a dog will not attack unprovoked and with malevolence.
Comment: I do not believe in rehabilitation. Too risky. I have been wary of pit bulls for at 6 years now. It could be longer but I remember well an event 6 years ago, when my daughter was but 3 months old. I took her and my son to a children's fair. A man had a pit bull with him, albeit on a leash (like a leash really matters) and he brought that dog right next to my daughter in her stroller. I was terrified, but tried not to show it, and moved her as far away from that time bomb as quickly as I could. Flash forward 5 years: while outside eating lunch at work, I saw a former co-worker and her dog on the lawn, with about 8 people around her. I decided to go say hi and as I got closer, I saw it was a pit bull. I stopped dead in my tracks, but for some reason decided to still go say hi. Turns out this was a rescue pit and she was going to get it "certified" and she was there to "socialize" the dog; show that others could pet and walk the dog without it harming them or showing aggression, etc. They were all talking to this beast like it was just the sweetest, cutest thing going. When the former co-worker brought the beast around the circle to me, the dog leapt up and in mid-air, lunged at my face with all teeth bared. Not a sign, or tell, that this was about to happen. I was shaking and sweating from my head to my toes, and left that circle cursing myself for being so stupid as to get anywhere near a pit bull. I'm lucky to still have a face. For some stupid reason, I think I entered that circle to give those damn dogs another chance -- maybe I was just stereotyping? Well, I got my answer in spades...
Wendy Blevin's daughter Charlotte was attacked by a pit bull while strapped into a wagon. The dog ripped off part of the child's scalp. Amaya Hess was attacked by a pit bull while in her stroller. The dog had Amaya's head in its mouth for 5-8 minutes. It took the claw end of a hammer to pry open the dog's jaws. When the dog released, half of Amaya's scalp was missing, her right eye was not in its socket and her right ear was torn from the side of her head.

Comment: Pro-Pit Mantra, "Cocker Spaniels Bite More Than Pit Bulls"

A reader at DogsBite.org recently commented on the often used pit bull advocate mantra: "But cocker spaniels bite more often than pit bulls!" We've all heard the mantra, the question is, what does it mean and what does it reveal about genetics, breeding, cocker spaniels and pit bulls? It reveals that "cocker rage" was primarily a result of indiscriminate breeding practices. Unlike pit bulls, however, spaniels were never bred for aggression or dogfighting.

Given the volume of indiscriminate breeding of pit bulls, plus a history of breeding for dogfighting, aggression and tenacity, are we supposed to believe that the pit bull's temperament and attack traits are not rooted in genetics? That instead, all of these traits were taught to the dog by its owner? Few people argue that the basis of the cocker spaniel's temperament problem is genetic. Pit bull advocates, however, refuse to apply this principle to their breed.
Comment: The American cocker spaniel started to become popular back in the 1940's, and as its popularity grew, so did the number of back yard breeders looking to cash in. The breed was a good choice for puppy mills and back yard breeders because of its relatively small size; you could cram a lot of them into small kennels in a tiny area, they didn't cost much to feed, and there was a constant, steady demand for them as pets. Today, we see them widely used to create mixed breed "designer" dogs such as the cockapoos by breeders whose only goal is to make money.

But this indiscriminate breeding came with a price...the breed suffered from serious temperament problems, and genetic seizure disorders like "rage syndrome", where the dogs suddenly lash out biting at anything near them. The breed standard for a cheerful, friendly companion dog was ignored by all of these bybers and puppy mills, and many of the dogs produced were nervous, snappish, fearful or otherwise unstable. Here is where the irony lies in the pit bull apologists argument that cockers are more dangerous than pits.

The basis of the American cocker spaniels temperament problems are genetic. Careless breeding created dogs with poor temperaments. No one was breeding cocker spaniels FOR aggressive temperaments, as guard dogs, as fighting dogs, etc. They were simply being bred to make money by filling a demand for a popular family pet; these were lap dogs, little old lady dogs, family dogs. No one was starving them to make them mean, chaining them in the back yard to a barrel, beating them or abusing them. They were not being fought, or used to guard drug operations. An aggressive temperament in a domesticated animal can result from careless or indiscriminate breeding, because temperament in domesticated animals is under a strong genetic control.

Yet according to pit bull advocacy groups, cocker spaniels as a BREED have aggressive temperaments, but pit bulls don't???? Pit bulls, which have been selectively bred for fighting another dog to the death in a pit, it seems, are unaffected by genetics. We can quantify and prove that MANY pit bull breeders are breeding dogs FOR human aggressive and/or dog aggressive temperaments, and the majority of those who are not SELECTING for aggression are not BREEDING AWAY from it. Yet, we are asked to believe that pit bulls could not possibly be suffering from the same problems as cocker spaniels.

The vast majority of pit bulls in the pet population were created by people who not only bred them carelessly, but often bred them for their dangerous aggressive temperaments. Pit bull advocates want us to believe that "its all how you raise them", and that only pit bulls who have been abused or not raised to be "nice" are dangerous. But how do they explain the biting cocker spaniels they are always talking about? Aunt Millie's nasty cocker was socialized, well loved and cared for when it nipped her grandchildren. Yet we are asked to believe, again and again, that the family pit bull that gets loose and mauls the neighbor must have been "trained" to do it.
According to WikiAnswers, 53 cases of US "cocker rage" have occurred in the last 17 years (this answer is likely invalid and was left by a pit bull advocate). Still, every day, at least several US citizens are severely injured by pit bulls. So in the last 15 days, pit bull rage has injured as many people as cocker rage has in 17 years. Much work has been done to eliminate cocker rage as well. The pit bull community, on the other hand, continues to breed for aggression. Here are just a few examples:

Comment: Hero Politicians Stand Up to the Pit Bull Lobby

DogsBite.org - A reader has left a comment regarding Omaha Mayor Mike Fahey. The message is clear: "The mayors who have stood up to the for profit breeder lobby and banned or tightly regulated pit bull type dogs are viewed as heroes by 95% of their constituents." In the instance of Councilman Brian Powers of Lakewood, Ohio, he initially stood alone in his desire to ban new pit bulls. Through education and perseverance, Lakewood passed the ban.
Comment: Mayor Fahey must have a lousy staff of advisors...any politician with half a brain knows that the MAJORITY of registered voters want pit bulls regulated. The demographics of pit bull owners are pretty obvious...they often are transient (renters), don't own property, (or property of any significant value), are typically young, often have a criminal records. As we have seen in several of the stories below, some individuals obsessed with these dogs suffer from metal illness. While there may be a very small number of middle class "responsible" pit bull owners who live in Omaha and vote, the majority of "pit bull activists" don't.

Its been the squeaky wheel syndrome...a very small number of pro-pit activists have made a lot of noise, and put a lot of pressure on local politicians with threats of law suits, etc. Now that we have seen some successful lawsuits against local governments, like the Daniel Decembre case ($1.8 million dollar judgment against the Orange County School Board) our public officials should smarten up and stop pandering to special interest groups and start representing their constituents. The mayors who have stood up to the for profit breeder lobby and banned or tightly regulated pit bull type dogs are viewed as heroes by 95% of their constituents.

Comment: Reporting a Dangerous Pit Bull as Suspected Insurance Fraud

DogsBite.org - A commenter recently left a message about a family being terrorized by a neighbor's pit bull. The person outlines potential steps a person can take to evoke action to get the dog removed. The comment was left as a suggestion and an information tool. DogsBite.org is a dog bite victims group -- we are not attorneys nor are we insurance agents. We publish this comment as an information tool that may help prevent future dog bite victims.
Comment: I have some very important information to share, and I hope this helps so many of you who have experienced being terrorized by a neighbors pit bull. A friend of mine is in a situation where her family, including her two small children, have been terrorized by a neighbor's pit bull.

For various reasons, going through our small town AC and police department have not accomplished anything; the owner simply refuses to comply, and the dog continues to roam loose. The dog has a bite history, yet because it did not result in serious injury, nothing was done. We have seen time and again, even in towns with dangerous dog ordinances, it is very difficult to get a dangerous pit bull removed from a home; usually the only time it happens is after a horrific attack causing devastating injury.

I suggested to my friend that the dog owners home insurance carrier is probably unaware that its customer is harboring a banned breed with a bite history. My friend called a few major carriers in our state to see if they were her neighbors carrier; the response she got was surprising. Both companies she called were EXTREMELY interested and cooperative, checked their data bases and told her, if the dog owner was their customer they would have an agent out to the home the following DAY. Unfortunately, neither carrier had the neighbor as a customer.

That's when I had another idea.

We all know that most pit bull owners try to remain under the radar...they often don't license and register their dogs, and when they do, they usually falsify the dogs breed, listing it as a "terrier" or "terrier mix", or even a "boxer mix". Failure to disclose a known risk to your insurance carrier is insurance fraud. (You can't, for instance, fail to disclose that you are manufacturing fireworks in your basement when you apply for homeowners insurance). I suggested my friend contact the state insurance fraud anonymous hotline and report suspected insurance fraud.

The response was immediate...the investigators confirmed that this was, indeed considered insurance fraud if the carrier was not aware that the dog owner owned a pit bull with a bite history. They eagerly took all the information, and assured her that she would remain anonymous. They requested dates of police resports of incidents, etc. The owner of the dog has a mortgage, which requires home owners insurance; it is quite likely his insurance carrier will cancel his policy if the dog remains, which means his lender can call in the loan. This may be the easiest way to remove a dangerous dog from a neighborhood, and I hope other posters take note.

Don't wait until you, your children, or your pets fall victim to a dangerous dog in your neighborhood. Make sure to make reports of threatening behavior, or of the dog roaming off leash. Write down everything, take photos if you can. Then contact your states insurance fraud hotline. The homeowner or landlord can lose their insurance coverage if the dog remains. Honestly, there isn't an insurance carrier in the world who would insure a pit bull with a documented history of aggression. They have a database which can locate the carrier and will work to eliminate the actuarial risk of a potentially huge claim by forcing the dog owner to get rid of the dog.
The Commenter's Steps Summarized
  • Do not wait until after an attack to take action. The attack may result in lifelong debilitating injury and massive medical costs.
  • Always report threatening dog behavior and off-leash dog roaming to animal control and the building/property manager of where the dangerous dog resides when appropriate.
  • Record detailed information regarding each incident, such as, the description of the dog, time of day, where the dog was scene and the activity it was engaged in.
  • When possible, take photos of the dog when it is loose or engaged in offensive behavior. It is also important to take photos of related "scene" information, for instance, the hole in the fence the dog may have escaped through.
  • Then contact your state's insurance fraud hotline. You can locate this information by typing into Google: "YourStateName Insurance Fraud Hotline." This is an example for the State of Texas. That said, all states work differently, and you may need to pursue your online search futher.

Comment: Pit Bull Victim List from June to October 2006

Sports Column Comment
While searching the Internet for various tasks, we ran across a comment that was left at a sports website on July 26th 2007. Michael Vick -- and his demise -- was in the news at the time. The comment was left at AJC.com, an Atlanta based publication, in a sports blog. Michael Vick was the topic of conversation, as was the fate of the Falcon football team.

The bantering amongst the comments touched on aspects like: the actions of "one player" should not cause a whole team to fall; how will the Falcons overcome this; why isn't anyone giving Vick the benefit of the doubt; PETA comes up; race issues are raised; one person even writes, "It is not a coincidence that most of the Vick supporters on this blog can’t spell or write..."

Conversations begin to build between users as well. As you continue to scroll through the comments on this web page this is clearly shown. The interesting aspect of the comments is that they lie in the realm of football, not in a realm such as DogsBite.org. Vick's actions tossed his fans into the seedy world of dogfighting and pit bulls; a world they may not have known before.

"I AM SELLING PLEDGE ALLEGANCE MIKE VICK T-SHIRTS," was followed by, "Chris Benoit had the good grace to commit suicide after his crime. Still waiting on an act of contrition from Mike Vick…" And then someone new chimed; someone who was likely not a sports fan. This person may have been victimized by a pit bull. After this post, the conversation tapered off quick:

Comment: Create Advocacy Group for Animals Victimized by Pit Bulls

A reader of DogsBite.org brings up an excellent point. The ASPCA and a slew of other animal groups spend a huge amount of time and money protecting the rights of pit bulls. It does not appear that these groups spend any time protecting the rights of animals victimized by pit bulls. Grandmother's dog and Aunt Sue's cat get ripped up daily by pit bulls. Horses and livestock are frequent victims too. What group will stand up for pets maimed and killed by pit bulls?
Comment: I am thinking that we should start an advocacy group for animal victims of pit bull attacks. If dog fighting is now a felony in all 50 states, why is it still legal to breed fighting dogs? Who is speaking for the countless animals mauled by pit bulls every day in this country? Where are the advocates for these hapless creatures?

The SPCA, Humane Society and countless shelters and rescues across the country have chosen to advocate for the "rights" of pit bulls...what about the rights of other dogs, especially smaller dogs who seldom survive a pit bull attack? Does a horse or goat suffer less than a pit bull dog, when it is being mauled? Do people love their horse any less than a pit bull owner loves their dog? Is it ethical to breed dogs that are designed to kill other dogs? Why haven't any animal rights organizations answered these difficult questions?

Where are all the supposed animal lovers when dogs, cats, horses, goats, llamas, deers, etc, etc, are being killed or maimed by pit bulls? Who will speak for them?

Comment: Victimized by Arcane Dog Laws that Protect Dangerous Dogs

DogsBite.org - A commenter has left a message that describes in chilling detail the reality of a severe dog attack followed by arcane dog laws and animal control policies that fail to punish the dog owner and protect the community from the offending dog. In this case, as in many others, the attacking dog was returned its owner so that the animal can attack again. After the second violent attack, then restrictions are placed on the dog.

These laws are not common sense; they are deadly.
Comment: I was told by a person at the animal control that if a dangerous dog is off their yard and near you, you can kill it and not have any legal problems because the dog was not on their own yard. My grandson was bitten by a pit bull on the back of his head after the dog knocked him to the ground. He was taken to the ER and will have scars for the rest of his life on the back of his head. Thank GOD that his hair covers the scars.

Several of the people in our neighborhood wrote affidavits to the animal control after being told doing so would help them (animal control) in court to prosecute the owners and have the dog removed. I got a call today telling me that they will not remove the animal because there's only been ONE complaint (even though we sent the other 6 complaints of different incidents from our neighbors, in the SAME envelope) and they won't do anything and we can't take them (the owners) to court because the dog was in his own yard and on a chain when my grandson went to pet the dog.

The owners allowed my grandson to enter their yard to play with their son and never told him to stay away from their dog. My 6 yr. old grandson didn't know the dog was dangerous and went to pet it. We didn't know the dog was in their yard and accessable to the children or we would not have let them go play at that house. We thought the dog would have at least been in their back yard on a chain IF it were chained up.

This dog has attacked other animals in the neighborhood, cornered other people and done some really crappy things and he gets to stay with the owner and the owner has NO CONSEQUENCES whatsoever! Why? Because no one complained about anything else until now. What a CROCK! It really REALLY makes me mad that our children in the neighborhood now have to be constantly worrying about being bitten by this dog and no one does anything!

Why should the children in our neighborhood be made to stay in their own yard if it's fenced or in their house, trapped and unable to leave it because a DOG who is dangerous is allowed to roam free if the owners let it or the animal can't be control and is constantly escaping? These "laws" are a joke in my opinion! If you have to deal with this kind of thing with the animals that have already attacked and nearly killed a child and NO ONE does anything why even make the freeking laws??!! Why should someone have to DIE before they do anything???!!
DogsBite.org urges readers to download DogsBite.org's FAQ about breed-specific law and send it to your city council members. The basis of these laws is to regulate dangerous breeds so that future attacks can be prevented. These same laws also give animal control the authority to quickly seize offending dogs. Breed-specific laws protect future victims and the community; many existing laws only protect offending dogs and their owners.

Comment: The Characterization of a Pit Bull Owner

DogsBite.org - An insightful reader left a brilliant comment regarding the Michael Coren blog post. The Canadian Broadcast Standards Council (CFRB) recently defended a segment on the Michael Coren show about pit bull attacks in which Coren characterizes pit bull owners as "white trash semi-criminals" and more.
Comment: "Honestly, the characterization of pit bull owners as white trash semi-criminals is pretty accurate; there is data that proves that pit bull owners in general tend to have criminal records. How many police drug busts involve the cops shooting aggressive pit bulls? Do we have a count? I have read some studies that link the presence of pit bull dogs to drugs/crime in a home.

I think there is another type of owner, who may not be a criminal, but who is drawn to the attention they receive for owning this type of dog. I think some of the "pit bull activists" fall into this category; they thrive on the drama and controversy surrounding these dogs, they love the fact that people fear them. I think these people are social misfits who feel important and validated by becoming part of this "crusade" against BSL.

I have always felt that the type of dog people choose as a companion is a true reflection of their personality. I think emotionally healthy people, looking for a family pet, have so many choices today...both in pure bred dogs and rescue dogs; that is it curious that people would choose a potentially dangerous, controversial, high maintenance fighting breed like a pit bull. I think the people who choose these dogs as "pets", are expressing their own sense of anger and alienation from society. The rescue angels themselves feel misunderstood and unlovable, so they identify with these dogs..its not enough to rescue any dog, no matter how friendly and adoptable it is; its more important to rescue a breed that no one wants.

The irony is, the egos and emotions of the "pit bull activists" are what have doomed these dogs and their animal victims for the past two decades; the pro-pit lobby has esentially protected the dog-fighters and criminal breeders by fighting resonable regulations on back yard breeders. If my chosen breed of sporting dog suddenly became popular and was being ruined by overbreeding, I would be screaming for regulations on breeders. That's a normal response from anyone who loves a certain breed of dog....sadly, the pit bull activists aren't true dog lovers."

Comment: The Humane Society Treats Cockfighting Differently than Dogfighting

Euthanize the Fighting Roosters!
Olathe, KS - A DogsBite.org commenter reports yet another paradox by an animal advocacy group when it comes to pit bulls versus other animals. In this case, it is the humane society (presumably of Olath, Kansas). A recent court order approved the euthanasia of more than 500 roosters, hens and chicks.

The humane society agreed with the court order and said, "It is a sad reality and there is no way to save the chickens." The human society added that the chickens "cannot be adopted out or mixed with ordinary chickens because cockfighters are bred to be hyper-aggressive. They are raised at separated stations as well."

Even storing them, according to the District Attorney’s spokesman Brian Burgess, requires special precautions. "If they can get within reach of one another, they can be dangerous to each other. If they can get within reach of a human, they can injure a human being. They're dangerous birds; they've been bred for fighting."
Comment: Interesting that the Humane Society understands the genetic weight of breeding for aggression with fighting chickens, but throws out genetics when it comes to breeding for aggression and fighting dogs. Don’t they understand that chicken aggression and human aggression are different?
Isn’t it all in how "a chicken is raised?"

My fighting chickens will only lick you to death and have never spurred or pecked anybody. How come no one is stepping forward to save these birds? Haven’t they heard of "Therapy Chickens?" My children are playing with our chickens right now. No wonder the chicken is often referred to as the "Nanny Bird."

It seems its one set of rules and interpretation of the science if it’s dogs, but an entirely different interpretation of genetic influence if it’s birds. These people are SPECIST! And that is exactly the same as RACISM! Death to 500 chickens just because of their breeding. Oh, this is sooooo wrong!

Comment: Use All Resources to Crack Down on Irresponsible Pit Bull Owners

DogsBite.org - A reader left an excellent comment about the recent attack in Omaha involving two mothers, one child and a pit bull that escaped its leash. The commenter suggests ways to crack down on irresponsible pit bull owners and how to get the dogs removed from a property. The writer points out that one must not stop in your efforts. Go to your county, city council, the sheriff and property owner.
Comment: "My family just narrowly missed a tragic event like this, three pit bulls broke through my in-laws fence and my mother in law grabbed my baby and ran into the house as the dogs charged the sliding glass door (as it was shutting). We were extremely lucky, I decided to go all the way with whatever rights I did or did not have, such as city, county, owner of the rental property (the tenant, neighbor of the three pit bulls was in love with his dogs so he was of no use to me) by the way this was in the State of California.
The dog owner is now down to one dog that is kept in the house, we are keeping a close watch, any aggressive incident within a 36 month time frame is considered a second call and the dog will be impounded and a hearing set (I will not lose I am determined) I will not stop. To others, I knew this was going to happen and I warned the tenant of what I would do, but he did not believe me. He is living in lock down now, with weekly visits by all agencies.
Hit the county, hit the City Council, hit the sheriff do not stop. Hit the owner of rentals that harbor these animals with all available info. On liability, give them police reports. I found the tenants lease stated no dogs. Getting the owner of the property to enforce is my next step. Lawsuits are scary to owners of rentals as insurance companies will not insure/protect/assume liability for dangerous breeds. Please post my comments wherever they may help others. Although I am not yet 100% successful, I am heading in the right direction."

Comment: High Marks on the ATTS Test is Pit Bull Propaganda

DogsBite.org - An commenter recently left a message about the rarely used, but commonly known to pit bull owners, ATTS temperament test. We describe this test and the group's temperament data being objectively statistically unreliable in our Pit Bull Myths section (myth #9). Pit bull advocates frequently use this misleading data to point to the breed's good temperament and to advocate against breed-specific laws ("Pit bulls pass the ATTS test more often than beagles!")
Comment: "I would like to make an important point about the American Temperament Test Society (ATTS) test, since it has become an urban legend promoted by the pro-pit lobby. Maybe this could go under "pit myths", or on a sticky.
The ATTS was NEVER designed to evaluate dogs to determine their suitability as family pets. It is designed to evaluate dogs for bitework...protection sports like French Ring and Shutzhund. It is commonly used to evaluate dogs that will be ultimately used as police canines. If you look at the number of dogs that take the test each year, German Shepherd Dogs (GSDs) outnumber any other breed listed by a huge margin; this is because they still are the most common breed used in police work.
The ATTS test rewards boldness...they evaluate how the dog reacts to gunshots, a threatening stranger, etc. There is also a tracking portion of the test, where the dog is required to walk across a strange surface, like plastic and wire (think of a police canine chasing a suspect). Timid dogs do not do well on the test, naturally. Also, the test is subjective...aggression is checked against the breed standard; one can assume that a Golden Retriever would be held to a different standard than a Doberman. It is unclear how the ATTS evaluators are experts on the temperament standard for every breed.
An important ommission in the ATTS test is dog/dog aggression; the test does not evaluate the dogs reaction to other dogs. A dog could pass the ATTS with flying colors, even if it was dangerously dog aggressive.
The pro-pit lobby has deliberately confused the public into believing that the ATTS is equivalent to the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test, which is often used to evaluate dogs for therapy work. The ATTS is an excellent tool to evaluate dogs for Search and Rescue (SAR), protection sports, Police canines, hunting trials, etc. But it in no way indicates which breed is "safer" to have as a family pet."

Comment: Pro-Pit Bull People Intimidate Local Politicians

DogsBite.org - Today a commenter on DogsBite.org confirms what we consistently write, most recently concerning Anderson, South Carolina. Pit bull special interest groups and individual pit bull owners intimidate local politicians. As the commenter points out, the smaller towns often get the most abuse. They indeed issue death threats too, of this DogsBite.org has documented proof.
Comment: "I can tell you that the pro-pit lobby puts a lot of pressure on local politicians not to regulate these dogs. You have to remember, in relatively smaller towns like mine, our local alderman are simply volunteers...mothers, fathers, people with jobs and families who live in the community. Its hard for them to take a strong stance on pit bulls, and receive death threats from pit bull owners/breeders.

Several years ago, my town government held some meetings about creating a dangerous dog ordinance, after several pit bull attacks. No mention was made of it being breed specific, just penalties for owners of off leash dogs that have a history of attacking people or pets. The mayor told me he was receiving threatening phone calls for just DISCUSSING the issue. These are the true colors of the pit bull lobby; they use fear and intimidation to maintain the status quo."
Pit bull advocates intimidate politicians, victims of attacks, writers and groups like DogsBite.org. They also use scare tactics with dog lovers saying things like, "If they ban our breed, your breed will be next!" But for 20 years, there has hardly been another breed. Their tactics are deviant and hostile. Many people and pets continue to get seriously injured and killed because their tactics work.

Comment: How Much Do Pit Bulls Cost All of Us?

DogsBite.org - Today, a wonderful comment was left at a blog post we recently published that reports yet another pit bull attack. If a study suggested by this commenter was ever done, every city across the U.S. would enact regulations around pit bulls. The 20-year old argument, yet still loudly drummed, "It's the owner not the breed," would be silenced forever.

How Much Do Pit Bulls Cost All of Us?
Comment: "Has anyone done a breed-specific study on how many tax dollars are spent dealing with the pit bull problem? How much for first responders, police, ambulance, then AC, costs for kenneling the dogs, feeding, euthanizing the dogs...time spent on paperwork by the police and AC, making reports...court fees, mediation fees, if there is a dangerous dog hearing, or if the owner is charged with criminal misconduct for having a dangerous dog. If the victim has no insurance, or insurance does not cover the complete cost of medical treatment entirely, then the taxpayers will pick up the cost of that also.

When private insurance picks up the costs...on the RARE occasion that a victim successfully sues the dog owner for damages...then the insurance industry just passes along the costs to the rest of us by raising our rates, or simply raising rates for ALL dog owners. When another animal is the victim...pet or livestock....again, the owner can try to sue, but is usually stuck with the cost of vet care/replacing the animal.

There is a huge monetary cost to our continued indulgence of this one subgroup of dog owners, who, by their own admission, think its a good idea to carry a small crowbar (break stick) with them to pry their dog's jaws off of anything it might decide to grab. It's simply bizarre that society keeps pandering to these people by refusing to regulate the breeding of these dogs."
The problem with pit bull dogs is everybody's problem. From children to senior citizens, from dog owners to nondog owners, from horse owners to livestock owners -- the entire common taxpaying base is victimized financially by these dogs. Many of us are victimized physically by them too. The only people who typically go unpenalized are the pit bull owners themselves.
