Pit Bulls Attack in Surrey Again; Owner and Dogs Flee the Scene
Too Many Ifs, Too Few Actions Surrey, BC - Police and SPCA officials are investigating a horrific dog attack that left a Bishon Frise broken and battered. The dog's owners, Wayne and Judy Evans, say they want the owner held accountable. BC SPCA’s Lorie Chortyk is advising caution, noting neither the three pit bulls nor their owner have been located. This cautionary advisement is a change of tune from Chortyk. Last year, after an adopted pit bull attacked it's owner, Chortyk recklessly said that the attack "shouldn't dissuade people from adopting or fostering pit bulls." She went on to whitewash the incident by adding that the attack was merely a "pack mentality" attack, even though the police officer only shot and killed the pit bull. The other "attacking" dogs were left untouched.
The latest attack happened while Judy Evans was out with Tasha on their daily walk. The pair was approaching their turnaround point when Evans noticed a man waiting across the street. She thought it was odd, but didn’t think more of it until he turned and started yelling at her to pick up her dog. She was confused by his request but reached for Tasha anyway.
Unfortunately, she wasn’t fast enough. The pit bull got to her dog and two more pit bulls rushed in afterward. Evans said that the man did try to call off the dogs, and got physically into the fray, but to no avail. As usual, the pit bull owner did not wait around to see if everyone was okay. Evans’ fingers were bitten in the attack; she was knocked over in the struggle too.
In more evidence that Surrey officials can't do their job too well, Chortyk said the SPCA is working with the RCMP to locate the dogs and owner. She said a license plate noted at the scene has been traced to a man whose pit bulls were reportedly involved in an attack in Victoria; the same plate was also linked to a less-serious incident in Surrey back in April.
Chortyk said the SPCA has been trying unsuccessfully to locate the man since April. She added that the RCMP has advised them not to approach the man, but to contact police once he is found. It is the SPCA’s role to take dogs involved in such incidents into custody. It is up to the city to decide if euthanization is in the community’s best interest, or if restrictions such as muzzling is needed.
The SPCA is looking into whether recommending a criminal-negligence charge is appropriate in the recent incident. They must first locate the man and dogs, prove they were involved and prove the owner knew his dogs posed a danger. "If we can prove...he had previous knowledge his dogs were dangerous and did nothing, there actually can be criminal charges laid," Chortyk said.
Fat chance Chortyk, officials can't even find the man. If the man is found there will be no way to prove the dogs stuffed into his car are the same dogs that attacked multiple times. Arcane dog laws work in the interest of pit bull owners, not in the interest of public safety. Pit bull owners consistently abuse these laws and endlessly draw on taxpayer's money in the process.Does everyone understand the logic of a pit bull ban? Most bans allow for immediate seizure of the dog if it is unregistered or has attacked. Officials do not have to prove "if" this or "if" that or "if" this and that -- nonsense laws. This pit bull owner is a perfect example of why Surrey needs a pit bull ban. His dogs are a perfect example why the genetic trait of animal-aggression in pit bulls is absolutely unacceptable.

Pit Bull-Mix Redirects Attack onto Cairn Terrier at Rye Beach
Owner of Cairn Terrier Also Hospitalized Rye, NH - Police are looking for witnesses to what a local dog owner said was a vicious attack by a pit bull type dog on her 13-year-old Cairn terrier, Tim. Denise Saurman was walking Tim on Rye Beach when she saw a group of four large unleashed dogs coming toward them. Scared they might hurt her dog, she turned and headed home.
Little good that did. As soon as she turned, a nearby leashed dog appeared suddenly riled by the four loose dogs approaching. That dog sunk its teeth into Tim, injuring him significantly. "One bite ripped the skin off his back," Saurman said. It looked like a fur coat hanging off from around his belly. I had to fight off all those dogs and pick up Tim and I ran screaming."
Pit bulls can "snap" into fight mode at the sound of a shout. Four oncoming, loose dogs would certainly spike a pit bull's arousal. In these instances, the pit bull is likely to attack whatever is nearest, be it a person, animal or car tires. Cases of the latter have been reported when a person is inside a vehicle and the pit bull can't get to him. So the dog directs the attack on what it can bite, the car tires. These attacks are called "redirected attacks." Unfortunately, Tim caught the brunt of this one.
The ordeal also took it’s toll on Saurman, who had to spend the night in the hospital with heart palpitations. Tim has been her companion since he was a pup and had already gone through so much, including surviving cancer. The beach walk -- Tim’s first since surgery -- was supposed to be a treat. "He’s like my child." Saurman said. "It was just very traumatic."
Police are now trying to locate the dog and its owner. The two neglected to stick around after the attack. Saurman, who owns a rental property in Rye, said she and Tim encountered the owner of the dog that attacked Tim in past trips to the beach. She said they discussed how the four unleashed dogs, which are regulars at the beach, are not controlled properly. But the two never exchanged names.
In other news:One Owner, Two Sets of Pit Bulls Euthanized for Attacks Rockton, WI - Two pit bulls were placed with the Rock County Humane Society and will be euthanized because of their history of violence. The pit bulls, one male and one female, were reported to have attacked a cocker spaniel puppy on June 1 and again on June 3. Beloit Police were called to the 200 block of South Street where the cocker spaniel received bites to the neck and ear.
The owners, Timothy Poff and Bre Calhoun, were given municipal citations for having animals at large after the first attack and surrendered the pit bulls to the Humane Society after the second attack. Poff was issued citations about two years ago for having two aggressive pit bulls at large as well. These two pit bulls were also euthanized by the Humane Society.

Dine-n-Dash in Austin: Pit Bull Owner Flees with Dogs After Attack
UPDATE 05/19/08: Leena Murray and her family have not given up hope of finding the fugitive pit bull owner. In what looks to be a new trend for victims, the Murray's have developed a website that provides details of what happened and what they are doing to track the owner down. The website also takes tips: badowner.blogspot.com
Future victims of fugitive pit bull owners should consider a similar plan. Blog websites are free and can be set up in minutes. WordPress and Blogger are two good choices. What happened to the Murray's must be understood clearly. The Murray's were victimized four times by the pit bull owner: first for the attack, second for rabies shots, third for financial costs and fourth for emotional costs.Leena has undergone 1 rabies shot so far. 05/16/08: Tick, Tock, Tick, Tock -- Time is Up Murray's 10-day limit is up. She now must undergo rabies shots. The pit bull owner did not come forward, nor did anyone report the man who was described as a white male, in his mid 20's, medium build, short dark hair, clean shaven, a tattoo on his upper arm and driving a black four door Honda.Rabies is a fatal disease, which means if you get it you will die. Pit bull owners are fully aware of the collateral damage they inflict upon society. If they were unaware they would not consistently flee, hide, lie, manipulate laws and blame victims (or anyone else they can) for the vicious behavior of their dogs. Such actions illustrate that they know exactly how damaging their dogs are to society, and they do not care.
05/14/08: Pit Bull Owner Wanted: Victim May Need Rabies Shots DogsBite.org is outraged that we have to report yet another victim that may need rabies shots due to a fugitive pit bull owner. As of May 14th, the pit bull owner that stuffed her dogs back into her car and sped away is still unidentified. The reward for information is $1,000 -- that's half the cost of rabies treatment.
05/09/08: Another Victim Offering Reward to Find Pit Bull Owner Austin, TX - Using tactics straight from the pit bull owner's Conduct Unbecoming Guide, the owner flees the scene after his dogs hop out of his car and attack a border collie-mix. The collier owner, Leena Murray, tried to stop the fight, and injured her hands in the process.
Murray and her dog had been standing at the entrance of a PetSmart store on Highway 183 when the attack happened. She rushed her dog inside and a vet at PetSmart stitched Bailey up, 25 times over. To Murray's suprise (but not ours) when she returned to the parking lot, the owner of the three dogs was gone.
Dorinda Pulliam, director of Town Lake Animal Center, said that animals are required to be secured in an open vehicle like a convertible or a truck bed, but no rules exist about dogs in regular cars. The attacking dogs are in violation of the leash law she noted, and possibly in violation of a non breed-specific vicious dog ordinance. Vicious dogs are prohibited in Austin. So after a dog has attacked 2-3 times the city can kick it out. The ordinance does not prevent serious attacks. Murray wants justice for her dog. She also doesn't want what happened to her to happen to anybody else. Murray filed a police report and is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the man who owns the three dogs. She also wants to find the Good Samaritan who stepped into the fight and rescued her dog.
Town Lake Animal Center admits that pit bulls have a higher tendency to be aggressive toward other animals. They leave out the bigger questions of why these dogs are allowed in our neighborhoods where many people own pets, and why these animals were heading into a PetSmart filled with pets?

Leashed Pit Bull Bites Woman, Owner Flees
Prophetic Woman Gets Bit Michigan City, IA - A 41-year-old Michigan City woman was the victim of an unprovoked dog attack as she was walking down Michigan Boulevard. The woman and a friend were heading home around 6 p.m. when they encountered a man walking a large white pit bull. The dog was on a leash, but the woman asked her companion to walk a little faster, as she didn't feel safe around the dog."Just as I said this to my friend the dog lunged at me and tore into my leg," the woman told police. She was found on the street with her left pant leg torn and bleeding from the wound left by the dog. She told police the man walking the dog helped to get the dog off her and then dashed across the street. Officers found the dog tied to a rail in a car sales lot and two men in the office said that the dog belonged to the man hired to do security. Police later found the owner and he was arrested of charges from another incident unrelated to the dog attack. Labels: chain snap, dine-n-dash

Pit Bull Attacks Cheektowaga Toddler
Pit Bull is AWOL; Toddler Facing Rabies Shots Cheektowaga, NY - Authorities are looking for a pit bull that attacked a Cheektowaga toddler. There are concerns about whether the dog was updated on its rabies shots. The dog attacked the toddler, Two-year old Brianna Warden, when she and her mother were returning from a nearby park on Friday. At the time, the toddler was still in her stroller.
The mother, Anna, said that she entered the building and the dog called Doo was sitting on the steps. "The dog came right after her and pushed her in the corner," she said. "Her stroller is still there and he had her up against the shovel." She said Doo's owner came down and pulled the dog away, but not before it "dragged his teeth across her face."
The toddler received over 20 stitches for the attack. Doo's owner got rid of the dog right away. Anna said the owner gave it back to the person he got the dog from or sold it. "The story's changed a couple times," she said. But now she and authorities are looking for that dog after hearing that his rabies vaccination may be past due.
Anna said, "There's gotta be somebody that has him or knows where he is." Cheektowaga Animal Control told the couple the dog will need to be quarantined first and then tested for rabies or else Brianna will need a series of shots. The mother doesn't want to have to put Brianna through the shots. Nor should she, the shots are expensive and painful.Labels: dine-n-dash, toddler attack

Pit Bull Attacks Horse in Classic Bull Baiting Form
New Leads Emerge in Pit Bull Attack UPDATE 04/11/08: Nearly a week after a pit bull and his owner fled after attacking a horse, the investigation into finding both was bolstered by new information and a growing reward -- one report says $2,000 another $3,600. The rider has also provided a clearer description of the dog and the car the owner fled in.
Between the rider's better description and information received from the Placer County Animal Services Division about a possible person of interest, new life is being breathed into the case. For people with information on the dog or owner, the state Parks Department can be reached at (530) 885-4527. For people wishing to add to the reward, Echo Valley’s phone number is (530) 823-1482.
04/09/08: Reward Offered in Pit Bull Attack on Horse and Rider An Auburn feed store put up reward money to help locate a pit bull and owner involved in a bloody attack on a horse. Echo Valley Ranch owner Greg Kimler said he was shocked when he learned of the unprovoked attack on a Lincoln rider’s horse last Thursday.
The pit bull owner fled in his SUV after the attack, which took place on an Auburn State Recreation Area trail. He and the dog are now being sought by the state Department of Parks and Recreation. Echo Valley of Auburn is offering $500 to the person whose information leads to the owner being held responsible for his actions.
Kimler said he was "disgusted with the owner not helping." All my customers are shocked, he said, because we all ride out there. Kimler, a Western States Trail Foundation board member, said some customers have already pledged additional reward funds and he expects the equestrian community to provide more backing.
04/05/08: Attack Pit Bull Still at Large The pit bull and its owner are still AWOL. The man is described as in his mid-to-late 20s, balding, with a short fringe of black hair near the ears, stocky and about 5 feet 5 inches tall. He wore jeans and a white T-shirt. Anyone with information can contact the Auburn State Recreation Area: (530) 885-4527.
Parker said her horse, Dancing Dandi, had to go back to the veterinarian after swelling was noticed in a hind limb. The horse now has two legs wrapped, as well as stitches in its face for puncture wounds and additional wounds near its tail. Parker is still in shock andconfused by the pit bull owner's behavior during and after the attack. “I didn’t think he would take off,” She said.
04/04/08: Unleashed Pit Bull Attacks 961 Pound Horse Auburn, CA - Traffic was halted for a short time on Foresthill Road to protect a riderless horse that was galloping down the roadway to escape an attacking pit bull. The horse's rider, Odette Parker, had been on an Auburn State Recreation Trail about 4 miles east of Auburn.
Parker said the dog, followed by two other smaller dogs and a man who stayed silent during the attack, ran yelping at the horse as it approached in a run, circled it and then jumped onto the horse’s flank, biting into the tail area. (What Parker may not know is that she just described classic bull baiting form, which has been in the bulldog bloodline for 2,000 years.)
Parker’s horse -- a 916-pound Morgan-Arabian named Dancing Dandi -- kicked its attacker away. But as a baiting pit bull would, he stuck around and continued to look for an opening. Parker said the dog was, "feinting, he was definitely out for the kill, there was no question." She yelled and screamed at the dog to no avail.
Then the dog leapt at the horse's face and locked its jaws around its nose. Dancing Dandi lifted the dog up and flung it into a tree. Parker tumbled off the horse as they both lost balance. With the horse on the ground trying to regain his footing, the dog attacked a third time. Fortunately, Dancing Dandi lurched to his feet. He took off down the trail with the pit bull in pursuit.Meanwhile, the owner of the dogs began loading the other canines into his car. Parker said the man refused to help as he silently drove away, even after she asked him for a ride to find the horse. Classic pit bull owner behavior.
Parker later learns that Dancing Dandi took a loop around the trail and the dog chased it to Foresthill Road. The dog apparently gave up the chase after that and was subsequently picked up by its owner as he drove toward Auburn. The gelding was finally caught by James Anderson about 3 miles from where the attack started.
In the chaos, Parker and Debbie Torres, who was out on the trail with her, did not get the license plate of the dog owner. The vehicle was described as a small silver SUV. The man was in his mid-20s, balding, with a short fringe of black hair near the ears, stocky and about 5 feet 5. He wore a white T-shirt, jeans, and had a sweatshirt tied around his waist.
Parker wants the dog that attacked her horse to be euthanized. Her horse was treated at the Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center for a swollen knee, lacerations to the face and inner side of the nose, and puncture wounds on the underside of the tail and thigh. Veterinarian Dr. Olivia Inoue said she’d treated horses attacked by a mountain lion and a coyote but never a dog.

Screwdriver Used to Pry Open Pit Bull's Jaws During Attack
"Get Me a Screwdriver!" Vancouver, WA - What started as a morning walk for Brian Paulsen and his Shar-Pei, Sheeba, quickly turned into disaster. A pit bull bolted from a nearby doorway and attacked. As Sheeba struggled, the pit bull owner grabbed it, but the pit bull wouldn’t let go of her head. The man holding onto the pit bull yelled to the other man, "Get me a screwdriver!"
When the man showed up with a wrench, the other man repeated it was a screwdriver he needed. Finally given a screwdriver, the dog’s owner inserted it into the pit bull’s jaws and pried them open. Released from the pit bull’s jaws but with her head badly injured, Sheeba ran toward her front door. Paulsen ran after her, but he heard tires screeching behind him. He turned around and saw the man with the screwdriver speed away with the pit bull in a red car.
A surgeon stitched up Sheeba’s ripped skin and treated the tooth punctures on her head, but an injury in one ear canal couldn’t be sutured and has become infected. Sheeba left the clinic with six draining tubes inserted in her head. Due to the infection, if the ear doesn’t heal in nine days, Sheeba will have to be put to sleep.
Officials have learned that the pit bull belongs to a visiting boyfriend, and are still trying to track him down. They think the owner’s skillful use of the screwdriver to unclamp the pit bull’s jaws could mean he’s had to do that before. They also want to find out if the owner has been involved in illegal dogfighting.Labels: dine-n-dash

Pit Bull Attacks Woman, Owner Flees with Dog
Pit Bull Attacks Woman Walking To Her Car San Diego, CA - San Diego County animal control officers are looking for a pit bull that mauled a woman walking to her car. The attack happened Tuesday afternoon in North Park on the 42-hundred block of Boundary Street.
Joyce Mulfinger was checking on some rental property when the loose dog suddenly appeared. The pit bull bit Joyce several times on both arms until a man grabbed the dog and disappeared. Joyce was sent to the emergency center.
She tells the local TV station, "He started jumping on me, biting my arms and all I could do was scream for help." Animal control officers scoured the neighborhood but they can't find the pit bull (or the man that disappeared with it) in order to test it for rabies. Harold Holmes, a lieutenant with the San Diego County Department of Animal Services, warns that the dog may still be in the area and that people should remain cautious.
Officers are looking for a tan and white, large-chested pit bull that weighs about 100 pounds and an unknown man. If you have any information, please call animal services at 619-236-2341.Labels: dine-n-dash
