Andre Smith fired his service revolver after he tried to use his Taser but it malfunctioned during deployment. Police were called to the area after receiving a complaint about loose pit bulls. The pit bull ran loose in a yard and then jumped a fence, chasing people and children in the street near a bus stop.
Cincinnati Police Kill Another Pit Bull -- Same Day (06/04/08): Cincinnati, OH - In separate incident in the same day in Cincinnati, several people joined in to fight off two pit bulls that were attacking a woman who was walking her small dog. One of the witnesses, Joyce Lovette said, "We were screaming for help and (the third woman) laid on top of one of the (pit bull) dogs until police got here. It was terrible." Lovette used an umbrella and a man used a pipe to beat off the dogs. Read the full story here.
Pit Bulls Seized in Meth Raid (06/04/08): Long Beach, MI - Pit bulls and meth makers, who could have guessed at the combination? Seven pit bull dogs were removed from a Long Beach home after a night raid at a meth lab. They also arrested four people, including one wanted on a warrant for a charge of aggravated assault with a weapon. "It was very apparent these individuals were cooking methamphetamine on a daily basis," said officer Brisolara. But the officer can't answer to why more police departments fail to support prohibiting pit bull ownership to felons.
Haltom City Cop Shoots At Pit Bull, Hits Teen (06/06/08): Haltom City, TX - A local teenager is recovering from a gunshot wound after a police officer shot him. Apparently the cop had been trying to shoot the kid's pit bull. A spokesman for the North Richland Hills Police Department, told reporters that the officer was attempting to arrest a juvenile suspect at the time of the incident. Just before the arrest, a pit bull lunged at the officer. Unfortunately, a teenage boy was standing near the dog.
The officer fired twice at the dog -- but both bullets hit 17-year-old Kevin Valenzuela. He was standing about 15 feet behind the dog. The officer, a four-year veteran did apologize to Valenzuela before he was taken away in an ambulance. But that is not enough for the victim's family. "They had no right to go onto my property, in the backyard, to give a warrant for a child who does not even live here," said Martha Moreno, the victim's sister.
Landlord Shoots, Kills Two Threatening Pit Bulls (06/08/08:) Cincinnati, OH - This marks the third shooting of a pit bull in Cincinnati in less than a week. Another Officer Shot By Partner During Pit Bull Attack (06/09/08): Stockton, CA - In case readers are confused, this is not the same case that was reported last week in Chicago where a police officer was shot by another officer trying to defend himself from a pit bull attack. In Stockton, California, a fellow officer shot a female parole officer after a pit bull attacked them during a search for a parolee. Why don't more police departments support regulating pit bulls? The incident happened at a home after officers had detained three people and found a locked room in the back of the house. Officers thought a fourth parolee was hiding in the room. When officers opened the door they were attacked by a pit bull. During the struggle one officer shot at the dog but hit a female officer. The shot officer was brought to a local hospital with a non-life-threatening wound.

Man Shoots and Kills Pit Bull (06/11/08): Eugene, OR - DogsBite.org hates to report that more citizens are shooting aggressive pit bulls. But police can't be everywhere all of the time, as it appears that pit bulls can. This man will not be charged because he shot the pit bull in self-defense. The man followed the animals, a pit bull and a doberman, after they attacked a cat. He got out of the car when he saw the dogs attack another cat. The pit bull turned on the man, at which point he fired two shots and killed the dog.Labels: citizen shootings, omaha, police shooting

During an arrest attempt, the pit bull appeared and viciously attacked the sheriff's deputy who was taken to the hospital. A second deputy shot and killed the dog, a dog Williams told reporters he was very fond of after the dog court hearing."I've had him for eight years. I've trained him every day of my life, and they're in there acting as if they can gang up on you, you know, just because he bit a sheriff." Animal control removed the pit bull's body from the house (pictured). Police said officer Evan Weaver was bitten on the face and hand and was taken to an emergency center. A second man, Curt Silfies, was also bitten; his injuries were less severe.
Neighbor Gerry Saemmer said the dog had been running loose in the streets all day, but had not shown any aggression. He even tried to contain the dog in his backyard, but the dog just jumped his fence. After Officer Weaver arrived, he lured the dog into a cruiser using treats and a leash Saemmer had lent him. Witnesses said the dog was friendly toward the officer.
When the police van arrived, Weaver lead the dog from the cruiser to the van. As the officer tried to get the leash, the dog lunged and bit him in the face. The driver of the van fired at the dog hitting it once. A second shot killed it. Some residents think police reacted poorly by shooting the dog; there were kids playing on the street at the time. The same folks neglect to ask the more obvious question: What if one of the kids had been attacked by the pit bull?

Mark's brother insists the dog was not dangerous. "Probably, sure, you've seen fightin' dogs before. Scratches and everything on 'em. There's no scratches on this dog at all, nowhere. He's not vicious." But the deputy warden also confiscated one German Shepard and five young pit bulls. In Toledo, pit bull ownership is restricted to 1 per household.
New sources were told there was another animal in a tank -- an alligator. The dog warden says he's not sure what happened to the alligator, only that his guys did not take it. 04/28-30/08: Pit Bulls Shot by Police
Police Shoot Pit Bull in Omaha (04/28/08): Omaha, NE - This just story just beats all. A worried neighbor, Leslie Smith, called animal control, then the police after a pit bull that was hanging around started acting dangerous. Police responded the to call, the dog charged an officer and the officer shot the dog six times killing it. Later, when animal control came to ticket the owner (for having a dog-at-large) the pit bull's owner got feisty -- so feisty that a police officer tased him. Now he's facing two charges: obstructing officers and a dog-at-large ticket.
Pit Bull Owner Upset After Dog Shot by Cops Red Hot (04/29/08): Kansas City, MO - Kansas City police shot and killed a dog in its own yard, but it's what happened next that infuriated the dog's owner. Fighting back the tears, Jim Conaway said that "Smokey" his dog was definitely man's best friend. Although Conaway remembers his Labrador retriever-mix as a loving companion, neighbors and police say it looked and acted like a pit bull.
"I can understand how they felt threatened," Conaway says, acknowledging that the dog police killed had a mean personality. Conaway's anger is focused on Kansas City Animal Control, who he says cremated his dog and ignored his efforts to claim Smokey's remains. "I didn't even have a chance to bury him like I would have liked to pay my last respects to him," Conaway says."The incinerator is fired up as soon as possible," says KCMO Animal Control Spokesperson Teresa Clark. Clark says Animal Control doesn't have refrigerator units to hold animal remains until an owner can be located. She says Conaway's dog wasn't wearing a dog tag and disputes his claims that he made several calls, shortly after the shooting, trying to retrieve Smokey's remains. "I can only tell you what I know and what I know is that we did not receive a call," Clark says.
Police were trying to serve felony warrants on a handyman Conaway had hired to work on his property. Resident James Maher said the pit bull had possibly killed his wife's Pekingese. Maher said that he had tried to stop the attack by hitting the dog with a garden rake. but the pit bull turned on Maher, who jumped over a fence to escape.
Maher said that both of his dogs, the Pekingese and a 10-year-old English bulldog, are trained to let themselves out of the house through the screen door to the fenced-in back yard. He said the pit bull must have jumped the fence and stalked his dog until it was near the door. As his dog went back into the house, the pit bull followed him inside and snatched him in his jaws.
Officers located the dog on a second story porch near Maher's back door. Officers first tried to catch the pit bull with a snaring pole. This didn't work; It didn't help that the dog continued to act aggressive either. So the officers shot and killed the dog. Police learned later that Maher's dog died after attack. Police also said the pit bull was originally kept in the owner's home.On the night of the attack, the pit bull escaped his home by crashing through a glass window during the evening's thunderstorm. The owner of the pit bull, Fuertado Wallace, does not have a listed phone number. He also did not make a statement to the news folks. The case is being turned over to Pennsylvania Dog Law Enforcement (AKA animal control). Meanwhile, Maher said he has already spoken with attorneys and is considering a civil suit against Wallace.
