2006 statistics
- 30 U.S. fatal dog attacks occurred in 2006. Pit bull type dogs were responsible for 53%. Pit bulls make up approximately 5% of the U.S. dog population.2
- The combination of pit bulls (16) and rottweilers (8) accounted for 80% of all fatal attacks.
- 47% of the attacks occurred to children (11 years and under) and 53% occurred to adults (21 years and older). Of the adults, 17% occurred to ages 55 and older.
- 53% of fatal attacks in 2006 involved multiple dogs; 13% involved chained dogs.
- 87% of the attacks occurred on owner property and 13% off owner property. Of the off-property attacks, 100% (4) were attributed to pit bulls.
- 30% of the victims were female; 70% of the victims were male. Of the male victims, nearly half (10) were 11 years and under.
- The state of Texas had the most fatalities (6). Of these fatalities, 67% (4) were attributed to pit bulls and 33% (2) to rottweilers.

In 2006, two fatalities involved dogs from two different breeds, thus producing a "death credit" total of 32, rather than 30. Eight dog breeds each contributed to one death and included a lab-mix, bullmastiff, great pyrenees, mixed-breed, wolf hybrid, presa canario, boxer and bulldog-mix.

Cody Adair, 4-years old, was killed by his uncle's pit bull. It was reported that Cody was playing alone on the front porch before the attack. His mother, siblings, and uncle were inside. The uncle's pit bull was in the back yard, chained inside a pen. When Cody wandered too close, the pit bull attacked and killed him. Cody was transported to Jane Phillips Hospital, but was dead on arrival with multiple dog bites. Police were told the dog did not have a history of aggression.

Ashton Scott, 11-months old, was mauled to death by the family's rottweiler in the first week of January. According to the "Childress Index," a newspaper in Childress, Texas, the infant was in the care of his great-grandmother when the dog attacked. She was warming a bottle for the infant when the rottweiler escaped from another room in the house and attacked the baby.

7-years old | Lunenburg, MA
Conner Lourens, 7-years old, was playing in a neighbor's yard with his brothers when the neighbor's bullmastiff attacked his throat. The child was taken by helicopter to UMass Memorial Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries. The small community was shaken by the tragedy. Town Administrator Daniel Keyes said, "We, as a community, are grieving the loss of this young child. His untimely death has rippled through this community. The towns' people are grief-stricken."

Dominic Giordano, 4-years old, was violently mauled by his family's rotteweiler and died after emergency surgery the following day. According to Cascade County Sheriff David Castle, the attack occurred when the boy was playing in the backyard with the family's two rottweilers. When his mother checked on him about 10 minutes later, one of the animals was on top of him. Castle said that the boy was unconscious and it looked like he had been dragged all over the yard.

52-years old | Mocksville, NC
Charles Dalton, 52-years old, was found dead on the side of the road. His parents said that his death marked the third son they had lost in 15 years. Two pit bulls were blamed in Dalton's death that belonged to his cousin, Jimmy Ray "J.J." Cowan III. The dogs, Infinity (female) and Rocky (male) were found with blood on them and seized by animal control. The Forsyth County medical examiner said that Gilbert suffered severe wounds to his face, scalp and arms. His right hand was also mangled in the attack. Two years later, Cowan pleaded guilty to manslaughter.

3-years old | Jameson, MO
Quillan Cottrell, 3-years old, was killed by his step-uncle's rottweiler. The boy's family had been watching the dog -- the dog was not normally at their home. Davies County Sherrif Kevin Heldenbrand said that Quillan might have been playing with the chained dog when it attacked. The mother got to her son, but not before fatal injury had been inflicted. Heldenbrand noted that Quillan's death was especially hard because the boy's step-father and his brother (the owner of the dog) both worked at the Pattonsburg jail. The family still has a memorial website.

20-55 years old | Compton, CA
A man -- whose identity was not released -- was mauled to death by three guard dogs after he jumped the fence at a metal working company in Compton. Authorities say the man suffered severe head and back injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said that the dogs, all pit bull mixes, attacked the man after he jumped the fence at the Cal State Steel Company. Security guards who heard the man's screams called 911.

Diana Acklen, 60-years old, was fatally attacked by three dogs in a rural residential area where she regularly walked. She was attacked on the property of Ronnie Swann in Decherd. The Franklin County librarian suffered 200-300 bites. Dental records showed that 2 of the attacking dogs, Great Pyrenees-mixes, belonged to Dr. Ephraim Gammada and had been running loose. The other dog, who belonged to Swan, was a mixed breed that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation determined was the sire of Gammada's dogs.

78-years old | Lusby, MD
Raymond Tomco, 78-years old, was found on the floor of his home with numerous bites from the three family pit bulls. One of the dogs severed an artery, which may have led to his bleeding to death. The three pit bulls in the home and two chained outside belonged to Tomco's daughter who found her father's body. Between June 2005 and March 2005 Christina Tomco had been cited nine times for having unlicensed and unrestrained dogs. She was issued fines totaling $600. It was also reported that Tomco was bitten by one of the dogs on a prior occasion.

27-years old | Phelan, CA
Shaun Lee McCafferty, 27-years old, was mauled to death by eight pit bulls. The San Bernardino County coroner said that investigators initially thought he was murdered due to the severe trauma to his upper body. A subsequent investigation uncovered that McCafferty was attacked outside of a meth lab by a pack of pit bulls. His girlfriend, Lacey Gidney, was also attacked, but she managed to climb a fence and get away. Authorities returned to the home, impounded the dogs and arrested the property owner and another individual.

Javelin Anderson, 15-months old, was attacked and killed by the family pit bull named Brutus. At the time of the attack, the toddler was being watched by an older sibling in the front yard of the family's mobile home located in the community of Conehatta. At some point, the toddler wandered away. The sibling found Anderson in the back yard being attacked by the pit bull that was reportedly chained.

Gemma Liliana Carlos, 2-years old, was fatally mauled by a dog owned by an employee of an animal adoption service. Authorities believe the toddler wandered away from a caretaker's home that morning. Her body was found near a doghouse by a deputy who shot and killed the tethered dog. The rottweiler's owner, Leo Sandoval, worked for an animal adoption service called Pet Guardian Angel. According to a co-worker, Sandoval did not raise the dog to be mean.

Sandra Piovesan, 50-years old, was mauled to death by her pet wolf hybrids. Humane officer, Elaine Gower, had been out to Sandra's home on repeated occasions. She was concerned for Sandra and feared she was losing control of the animals, but the victim thought her dogs would not attack her. Sandra's body was found by her daughter inside the dog pen where she kept 9 wolf hybrids. She suffered extensive injuries to her extremities and the lower portion of her torso.

25-years old | Morgantown, WV
Brandon Coleman, 25-years old, was found dead in his Morgantown apartment from a bite by his pet pit bull. According to the state medical examiner and the Morgantown police, Coleman died from "injuries sustained to the trachea by a dog bite." Rondrick Smith, his roommate, said Coleman had a history of seizures. Two years later, Kelli Chapman, who also suffered from seizures, was killed by her two pet pit bulls while sleeping. In both instances, it is unknown if a seizure caused the fatal attack or if the attack caused a seizure.

Mireya Puga Davila, 3-years old, was mauled by a family pit bull and a lab-mix after she wandered into the yard at her home. One of the dogs had a litter of puppies and she wanted to see them. Hidalgo County Sheriff's officers said Mireya's mother was inside the house at the time of the attack. By the time the mother ran out, it was too late. It was also reported that the little girl's uncle had brought one of the dogs' home just days earlier. Both dogs were euthanized by the order of a judge after Mireya's death.

Jimmie Mae McConnell, 71-years old, was mauled to death by a pair of pit bulls while gardening in her backyard. The dogs jumped the fence and fatally attacked her. When firefighters and paramedics arrived, they had to use an axe and a pole to remove one of the dogs from her body. For years, Jimmie had told people that she was afraid of the neighbor's two dogs. After two years and two criminal trials, the owner of the dogs, Derick D. Lee, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to four years in jail.

John Brannaman, 81-years old, was attacked by a pair of loose pit bulls in his front yard while taking out the trash. He died one week later due to complications from the attack and heart failure. Neighbors said the dogs came out of nowhere and suddenly attacked the elderly man. One neighbor, Bobby McIntyre, shot and killed one of the dogs while another neighbor used a shovel to pry the other dog off the victim. About a month later, officials charged the dog owner, Peter Santiago with culpable negligence.

30-years old | Coral Springs, FL
Shawna Willey, 30-years old, was attacked and killed by her presa canario as she bathed the animal. When paramedics arrived, they saw Shawna dead -- covered in blood and wounds -- and her 120 pound dog standing over her acting aggressively. The police shot and killed the dog named Xino. Her daughter Tyra witnessed the attack. She ran to a neighbor's house to get help. Shawna's boyfriend, Lazaro Rivero, said they had the two presa canaries (each about a year old) and a pit bull for protection.

49-years old | Spur, TX
Frank Campbell Baber, 49-years old, was attacked and killed by two pit bulls near his motor home that was parked inside Blackburn's Auto-Salvage. Sheriff Brendle said the attack apparently started inside a building next to Baber's motor home. There were signs Baber tried to fight back, including a 20-foot trail of torn up ground and blood spatter. When Brendle arrived, he found Baber lying on the ground. He said the condition of the body lead him to believe the attack happened within three hours of the call to police.

56-years old | Miami-Dade, FL
Pablo Fleites, 56-years old, was fatally mauled by a 5-year old male boxer. The dog had blood all over its body when police found Fleites dead in the dog's pen. A 6-month old female boxer was also in the pen, but authorities did not believe she was involved in the attack. Authorities do not know what prompted the attack, but believe the victim may have been intoxicated when he entered the dog pen. Fleites lived on a shed on the 3-acre property. The owner of the property found the lifeless body and called authorities.

Julius Graham, 2-years old, was mauled to death by a rottweiler that dug his way out of a pen to attack him. Little Graham wandered into the yard next to his grandparents' house when he was met by the dog. After deputies arrived, they shot the dog to death. The boy was pronounced dead at Lenoir Memorial Hospital. At the time of the attack, the dog owners, Katona and Johnny Ormond, were out of town and a family member was housesitting. Authorities said that the dog had not been identified as a "problem dog" before the fatal attack.

Jeannine Fusco, 44-years old, was killed after being bitten in the head and throat by a pit bull she and her sister were watching for a friend. Police said the dog violently attacked 44-year-old Jeannine Fusco in the garage of her home. The victim suffered severe bites to her throat, head and neck. By the time officers arrived, Jeannine was already dead, and the dog had disappeared. Her sister, Valerie Wall, 43, was bitten on the leg and hand and taken to a local hospital. Police officers later found the dog in the home's backyard and killed it.

41-years old | Willis, TX
David "Ted" McCurry, 19-years old, and Kimbery Cunningham drove to the residence of Firas Beseisso to inquire about the sale of a large, mature pit bull. The three were talking when the pit bull, Dax, broke free from the owner and attacked McCurry and Cunningham. Cunningham was attacked first but she was able to get to the roof of her car for safety as McCurry and Beseisso attempted to restrain the dog from further attacks. While attempting to restrain the pit bull, it attacked McCurry, biting over 90 percent of his body. The fatal bite was to his neck.

Ariel Pogue, 2-years old, of Tallapoosa County was mauled to death outside her home by one of the family's three rottweilers. Neighbors say the girl and her mother were getting out of their car when one of the animals, which wasn't tied up, attacked the toddler. Fourteen year-old David Holloway was walking nearby with a friend when he heard the baby's mother screaming. Holloway tried to help save the baby, but Pogue's injuries were too severe and she died at the scene.

10-years old | Dillon, SC
John Matthew Davis, 10-years old, was attacked by as many as 6 dogs described as bulldog boxer-mixes while walking home. His body was found in the yard of Bentley Collins. Investigators never determined why the boy was in the yard with the dogs. Collins, 53, was charged with involuntary manslaughter and keeping unconfined, dangerous animals. Before Collins surrendered himself to authorities, one of his dogs was stolen from the county pound. The five remaining dogs were euthanized after the theft. During the 2009 trial of Collins, information was revealed that the dog was not stolen, but had instead escaped from the pound. It was later found dead on the side of a Dillon highway. The trial also revealed the attacking dogs were likely "pit bull-mixes." Collins was convicted of involuntary manslaughter and sentenced to five years in prison.

22-months old | Bamberg, SC
Allen Young, 22 months old, was mauled to death by his father's four pit bulls. Bamberg County deputies said the child was in his father's bed asleep when the father stepped outside to talk to his landlord. The father was reportedly outside for "5 to 10 minutes." In this time, the pit bulls dragged the boy from the bed and began mauling him on the floor. The boy died the next morning at a hospital. The pair had recently moved to the location of the attack and the father had not yet had time to build a pen for the dogs. The father was subsequently charged with involuntary manslaughter.

Luis Romero Jr., 2-years old, died after being mauled by his family's two adult rottweilers. The attack happened at a home near Cabello and Valencia Roads. The Pima County Sheriff's Department says his mother found Luis Fernando Romero Jr. when the dogs were attacking the toddler in the front yard. Romero's parents tried driving him to the hospital, but saw a sheriff's vehicle and stopped. A helicopter was called to take the boy to the hospital, but he died before arriving at University Medical Center.

Richard Adams, 47-years old, was found half eaten at an auto sales and repair shop before a Sheriff's deputy shot and killed the dog. According to the Russell County Coroner John Morgan, a man who stopped by the garage to feed the pit bull discovered the mutilated body. Morgan also said there were signs that Adams was alive when the dog attacked him, eliminating the idea that Adams might have suffered a heart attack and then gotten eaten after he died.

James Eisaman, 40-years old, was mauled to death by his girlfriend's two rottweilers. Sandra Ross, his girlfriend, said she heard noises in the basement and found Eisaman lying on the stairs bleeding. At the time of the attack, the victim was in a leg immobilizer due to a broken leg. Authorities questioned why he was in the basement at all. Eisaman suffered severe wounds to his head and neck; there were no bites on his arms or torso. Ross said that when she reached Eisaman, he mouthed the words, "Don't destroy them" (the dogs).

4-years old | Pasadenao, TX
Pedro Rios, 4-years old, was mauled to death by two pit bulls in his east Harris County neighborhood. The boy's mother heard her son's screams and ran outside to find him being attacked by the pit bulls at the King Parkway mobile home community. She suffered minor injuries as she tried to fight them off, but the dogs refused to let go of her son's body. The dogs released the boy only after being distracted by the lights and sirens of the deputies' cars when they arrived minutes later.
